Internet Censorship

Now I'm very confused. I posted here last night and it shows in my subscribed thread but my post is gone. :confused3

The payment would be just a one-time thing (at least in the article's sense), right? It's "only" $.99, and I'm sure it would indeed help cut down on some of the nasty responses. But I like being anonymous (even when I don't have anything nasty to say, lol). Like PP said, it's too scary to think that people can look me up otherwise.

Another thing to think about: what about the folks that don't have credit cards? Are they not allowed to leave posts, since they have no way of verifying their identity? It would affect some lower income people, yes (and I'm sure there'd be an argument that if they can afford a computer, then can afford at least a debit card, but they could be using the library's computer), but also a lot of Dave Ramsey (and similar) followers who don't like using credit cards. Seems a little too discriminatory to fly, especially since what happens when they start slowly raising the rate? Who's the voice of the commentaters then?

There is precedent for restricting certain things just to folks who have credit cards, as another layer of assurance that a party is a legitimately-active participant within our economy.

They're charging a one time fee of 99 cents for the sole purpose of making the person give an accurate name and address for the credit card transaction.

I don't believe the issue is censorship. I believe they are trying to remove the veil that some hide under when posting rude, vulgar, hate fulled comments and make them take ownership of their words.

The liberty of being Anonymous and posting is making things worse on Social Media. The owners/managers of forums should keep a constant check on this menace. However, I’m not sure about how many people will actually pay to participate on such platforms.

Moreover, people will tend to foster those that don't. We've seen in the past that the more open solutions are the ones that people use, and with social networking, that's what matters. The folks who reserve themselves for the more exclusive or restrictive services are too few to overcome the social inertia that drives people to Facebook, MySpace and such.
