Internet and Blackberry question

Hi, I didn't pay too much attention to the previous internet posts - now I guess I should have  Quite unfortunately, my husband's got work issues and we sail Saturday.

I want to verify that....you can only get on the internet from one of the ships computers in a couple of locations. There is no connection in the staterooms, right? There is no way to connect your own laptop to the internet even if you go to the internet cafe, right? I read something only being able to retrieve some emails - like yahoo (?).

Has anyone been able to receive emails on their Blackberry's? If so, did you have to set anything up ahead of time - like I've read to call your cell phone company ahead of time. But then, the cell phone would only work in the 3 ports, right?

Sorry for so many questions!

We haven't sailed yet, but my DH will be taking his Blackberry with him on our cruise (work issues too!). It's my understanding you need to call your cell phone provider in advance and let them know you'll be in Mexico, and ask them to adjust your plan for that week so that you can call and receive emails during that week (otherwise it will cost you a fortune).

And yes, you are right, cell phones/Blackberries will only work while in port. I 've heard some people have been able to get reception at other times but I'm assuming they must have been close to a port, etc. Certainly out at sea I can't imagine getting any reception whatsoever when you consider there are times in town when you can't get reception :rotfl2: .

You are correct, only connection is using DCL equipment. If the email can be accessed from the web, then you should be able to access it on the ship.

Like you said, the Blackberry will be dependent upon getting a signal.

Enjoy your cruise....

It was up & running on the Magic in May '04, but not available to passengers.
I heard that during dry dock they are going to open it up to passengers..

Anyone on the Wonder can confirm/deny if it is opened up to passengers??????
