Firstly a confession - I know nothing about computers except how to switch it on and get to the Disboards.

Now can anyone ( in idiots language) explain how to connect my laptop to aol from Coronado springs resort?

I have set up some numbers but what else?

Is there a special lead I need to buy?

AOL say £2.50 per hour is that what it will cost or will there be a resort charge?

I really want to be able to email people from my room. I usually go to Disney quest but it would be great if I could work out how to get on from the room

The preferable method is to the hotel in advance and ask them if they provide a wireless service for internet access.....its extremely likely they will have. Then if your lapper doesnt have wireless built in, just buy a card for about 15 quid or so.
Alternatively, they may supply internet accesss to their rooms by a network, so you just need a network cable from the wall to your laptop.
The only problem is that these access methods will provide the internet, and not AOL, but thats not really a problem, youd just have to set up a quick hotmail account for your emails, and use Internet Explorer with a change in the connection settings (to lan from dial up).

Otherwise, you are going to have to find out the local dial up number for AOL from that area, and use the hotel room phone number, which wont be that cheap I wouldnt have thought. Hopefuly the number you get would be a 1-800 number though.

Oh, and you might (and I have no knowledge on this) need to establish if your modem on your lapper is US phone line compatable....it may not be, or may just need a region setting changing.

Once you are connected to the Internet (by hook or by crook) you can just run up the AOL client on your laptop and you're in. I think there's a setting in the client for LAN access -- use that. Although the last version of the client I used was 7 (might have even been 6!).

You can access your account by logging in at www.AOL.Com

You can also add a new location, get the software to search for connections and it will pick up the LAN.

You can also create a location for your dial-up and configure it with a local AOL access number. Rember that calls from hotel rooms can be very expensive

Try experiment creating locations before you go, and don't delete your hom account.

A further option is that some resorts (OKW) have internet enabled public phones. For a charge you can surf on a pay as you go basis.

When i visited Orlando in 2003, I did a quick google search for 'a free internet dial up provider', signed up, got their local toll free access number, changed my settings on my laptop which I took with me and was able to download all my pics and email firends back home rather smugly with the best ones.

Had major aggo getting the laptop on flights as hand luggage due to the weight(haven't they heard of business travellers!) and an extra search upon leaving the US!

This year I'll probably just use flash cards with my digi camera. Their price has dropped through the floor (Try ebuyer.co.uk) and I have a couple of large capacity ones and can pickup cheap additions in Walmart!
