Marriotts are business hotels. The larger portion of Marriott guests are business travelers who's companies will pay for the Internet bill.
Courtyards attract a mixed bag of business and liesure travelers.
Fairfields are almost all liesure travelers, and throwing in a perk that costs the hotel nothing like Wi-Fi is something that will attract guests to them over another brand.
Most leisure travelers are not as brand loyal as business travelers as they don't generally stay enough nights to rack up any perks with the frequent guest programs.
