Does anyone know whether I would be able to connect to the internet at HH? Trying to figure out whether I will be able to get some work done while there over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.
Thanks,
Cam

I'm not sure about connecting but the Library has free access using PC stations.

I was able to connect using AOL from our room.

But no you will not get any work done - you will be having too much fun.

Thank you Dean and Robin--
It may be a small price to pay to be able to go away notwithstanding a trial scheduled for late January. I am determined to buy a laptop and sacrifice a bit of relaxation time rather than to sacrifice it all to work at my office.:)
Thanks, again.

AOL does have a good local dialup connection at HH. Few other national internet providers currently have a local connection.

This summer, I used slingshot.com (a prepaid ISP) and was able to get online easily thru the dataport on the room telephone. There is a .35 charge for each local call for DVC members and .75 for non-members.

I have done dial-up internet access each time I have stayed at Hilton Head. Just make sure that you have a truly "local" number before you leave and that you check out your dial-up modem settings so you know they work before you try from HH. If you have a local number, then the cost is only $0.35 for the call. The lines are not real clean, but I've been able to get in the 28K - 42K range of connection.

I've not found any real broadband connection at HH. The rooms are not wired for ethernet and I have not seen any place to plug into a broadband hub in the common rooms. It sure would be nice if they would put in a cable broadband connection and a router in the Den, so we could do high speed connection. I know I'd pay the $3 / day cost.

One lesson learned - bring a long phone cord, as the phone connection is not near the table where I put my laptop.

WoW, Cap!! I am very impressed. I am not that computer savvy. Maybe you will have to meet us there to hook up our computers!
I think it would drive me nuts if I took a laptop and then found I couldn't figure out how to use it. :p

Keenercam,

I'm really fortunate because my subdivision has not one, but two competing broadband providers who have the cable connections in the pedestals in our yards. I've been on high speed broadband to the Internet for over three years, and now couldn't do without it. I fell like I'm going camping at DVC in relation to the Internet connections. Everything else is 5-star.

If you can use your laptop modem to successfully dial-up from home, then it should work from HHI. Just be sure you know what the per minute phone charges are to the number you are calling.

thank you so much. I would not have even thought of tracking down a truly local dial in number and getting all the settings done ahead of time. call me clueless:bounce:
