A New Zealand teenager who visited Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood tourist hot spots and the beach this month had measles and may have exposed others, public health agencies announced Friday.

The girl arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Aug. 11 and went to the Desert Palms Hotel in Anaheim, officials said. She is believed to have gone to Disneyland and the Disney California Adventure Park on Aug. 12 and then Universal Studios, the TCL Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds in Hollywood and the Santa Monica beach and pier on Aug. 14-15, authorities said.

I work at a veterinary clinic and in order for pets to travel either to other states in our country or to other countries around the world they need to complete a vigorous health check by a USDA Accredited Veterianrian and updated vaccines/tests etc and documentation to enter another location. It can be a very long involved process and especially pets traveling to New Zealand ironically. Maybe people need to show proof of vaccinations prior to travel as well?? Very sad situation...

I am not sure carrying papers would work, as vaccinations aren’t always 100% effective. I am pro vaccination but I think it is naive to think they are a guarantee. I have had my measles vaccination and I would still be concerned if I knew I had been exposed. Plus, there is always the possibility of forged documents, or language barriers when it comes to confirming international vaccinations. I feel bad for the people on their flight. It’s a long flight in a small space with recirculated air, almost certain to spread something like measles.

plus measles are infectious before symptoms show. so even if seen by doctor day before flying she could still be infectious on plane and there before anyone would know. been years ago but had a friend who ended up having to stay an extra week at WDW because child broke out with chicken pox on last day. sad to say they exposed everyone at parks all week but didn't know until child broke out and wasn't allowed to board plane home

My sister got stuck in Japan with ...Cold symptoms, could not leave the airport! Welcome to the USA, where Anyone enters.
I think one should have Proof of vaccinations before entering the country.

Nothing on this planet is 100%. In the case of vaccinations, what you describe is why it's so important for folks to get vaccinated. Herd immunity is a thing.

Please, people. For the love of god. VACCINATE YOUR KIDS.

If vaccinations arnnt 100% how come smallpox was eradicated from the planet because of the vaccination.

That whole "herd immunity" thing I was talking about. People who've been vaccinated don't get it and thereby don't spread it to folks who either couldn't be vaccinated (Allergic to the vaccine, compromised immune system, etc) or the vaccine just didn't take (They warned us about this when I got my Smallpox vaccine in the military. Apparently it just doesn't take for some people.)

Sorry, but this has not been proven. There are real risks with vaccination that parents should have a right to not vaccinate. People need to be better informed.

Again, this isn't true. With some vaccines you do "shed" the vaccine and could actually infect a person who isn't immune. There is a lot of misinformation out in the world about vaccines.

At this risk of derailing this thread even further...do you have peer-reviewed, scientific evidence to back up these claims?

I absolutely support vaccines. However, an example of shedding is the oral polio vaccine.

From the CDC:

The oral polio vaccine (OPV) is used in many countries to protect against polio disease and has been essential to the eradication effort. People who receive OPV may shed the virus and can infect others, especially those who are not vaccinated. In areas with low vaccination rates, the OPV virus can continue to infect new individuals. In rare cases, the OPV virus can accumulate changes over time and become like wild poliovirus (WPV). These new viruses are called vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPV) and can cause polio disease.

Despite this, it is used in some countries because the risk of shedding is outweighed by the significant increase in coverage (also, there are now ways to mitigate the risk of transmission by shedding).

This is my no means meant to suggest that I think that we should stop vaccinating against polio.

I think the question really is - do you have peer-reviewed, scientific evidence to back up your claims? All of the leading medical journals have already admitted that they cannot find reviewers that are independent and non-biased. Furthermore, there are NO studies looking at giving ALL of the shots in the vaccine schedule and what they do to children.

A really great website on the facts of vaccination - good and bad - is at http://immunityeducationgroup.org. Then specifically on the science of vaccines can be found here - http://immunityeducationgroup.org/vaccine-safety-is-the-science-really-settled/.

A quick look at your 'source' shows me this is one the last places people should go for information and there's a strong bias in the website itself. Lots of key words used to elicit certain emotions, capitalization on certain words, bolding on paragraphs, attempts to be cutesy by using emojis, etc. You can give some information whilst also still being incredibly biased and boy is this website biased.

It's a hard thing when we look at visitors outside our country who may or may not have the same requirements as we do and this goes for the reverse when we visit other countries.

I've seen how other countries handle pets especially with rabies vaccinations but places also place quarantines and age limits and other things on pets. Things that are not so equally applied to humans.
