Has anyone purchased international calling cards at Wal-mart, 7-11, etc. to use when they get in port?

I want to make sure my phone and data plan are completely off for our cruise but I thought this may be a good way call home and check-up? Plus/minuses??

THANKS

It's better to buy the phone card when you get to port. Also, not all pay phones will let you use a phone card on the islands. If you have your heart set on buying a phone card here to use make sure you read the fine print very carefully as to how to make an international call back to the US and how many units each minutes will 'cost'.
If you need to stay in touch with people at home find an internet cafe and send emails, the crew will be able to tell you where the cheapest internet cafes are located.

There were big red signs on all the pay phones near the dock in St. Maarteen and St. Thomas that said "NO CALLING CARDS ACCEPTED" so I wouldn't count on being able to use any calling card no matter where you purchased it.
