Intermittent fasting success stories?

I do IF and CICO, because IF is not an excuse to pig out during that window (oink, that's me!).

I'm in my early fifties, and have reluctantly come to understand that a pound a week (with some wild fluctuations day to day) is the best I can expect. Better than gaining, though!

About 11years ago I did a program through our hospital. It was protein shakes. I lost 20 lbs pretty quick then a few more pounds slower. Then the weight loss stopped dead. And I followed the plan to the letter. I was so mad and upset after a couple weeks of nothing plus horrible constipation. I finally quit and went back to the weight watcher plan. I lost 5 more pounds that way. I really believe it was me eating too little.

Following a fad diet is never a good idea and the success is likely short-lived. I would first consult with your doctor if you think you are overweight for safe/effective methods on how to lose weight.

I also gained a few extra pounds for quarantine. I didn't have a lot of sports to lose weight, so I decided to go on a diet. I ate small portions several times a day and it worked well. Now I have time to exercise over my body and to eat healthier food. Advices?
Welcome to the dis, Sophi.

Eat strictly out of the book I posted above. And knock out 150+ minutes of moderate cardio a week. Slowly build up to it. Ideally, you'll see the most results doing 4 hours a week.

I have not lost weight doing "just" intermittent fasting, but it does help me with doing calorie control, etc. so it is a great tool for weight maintenance and to add to a weight loss regimen. The main thing that intermittent fasting has done for me is pretty much totally clearing up my stomach issues. Gut rest has been magical in my case. While I never plan to do once a day eating or anything else I consider overkill, I LOVE doing an 8 hour eating window. Basically I skip breakfast, eat at noon and don't eat past 8 pm. During those hours I eat whatever I want and watch or don't watch my calories according to my own whims. When I am trying to lose weight it's much easier now because of the shorter eating window. When I'm not really watching my food intake, I still generally maintain because of the smaller eating window.

Admittedly, I've some periods of high stress in the past year where even with intermittent fasting, my bad diet has caused weight gain. I've also had some time periods where I stretch the eating window to 10 - 12 hours and I definitely take in more calories when I do.

The reason I started Intermittent fasting was as one prong of a dementia prevention strategy I read about somewhere. 1. exercise 2. brain challenging tasks 3. good "sleep hygiene" 4. Mediteranean style Diet 5. Intermittent fasting. Time will tell if I avoid dementia, but when I am consistent with all of the above I do feel better all around and keep my weight under control. Looking at this now I'm realizing the reason I'm struggling might be that I've loosened up on a few of (well, basically all of...) those prongs! Time to get back to better habits.

I don’t weigh myself but went from a size 8/29 Jean to a size 2/24ish with intermittent fasting. I added yoga after I lost the weight but all the weight was lost from diet alone. I made conscious choices but restricted or eliminated nothing from my diet. I’m currently hovering at the top of my new average but I’ve been making lots of questionably choices lately.

Because I work straight overnights and 12 hours shifts my eating window (6pm-midnight) is much later than most (most days it’s closer to 8pm-midnight other than a non-water beverage some days)

I truly think all these “techniques “ can mess our bodies metabolism up. I personally feel like eating protein, healthy fat and complex carbs at every meal in a calorie deficit is the long term way for success. It fuels the body while not spiking insulin or stressing the body out. I, myself, have tried everything under the sun and wish it was easier. But to feel good and lose or maintain long term this seems the most “logical” to me if that makes sense. Now if I could just stick to that theory!😃

A recent large, year long clinical study on IF concluded that it makes absolutely NO difference in weight loss, weight control, or blood sugar control over traditional calorie restriction. You can Google it to read more details.

Basically, its just another useless fad that may do more harm than good, in the long run, especially to women (it messes up hormones).
