We are coming down for Halloweentime and are staying at the DLH for our trip. The flight gets in at 10:30 pm at SNA and I've booked the Embassy Suites for that first night because I don't want to pay DLH prices to get in that late to the hotel. I booked Embassy Suites because they have a shuttle but apparently it only runs 8-5 based on some recent reviews.

I was thinking about moving to the Hampton or the Hilton that is directly across the street from SNA. Anyone walked that at 11ish at night? It will be me (F) and two young girls. I'm not super sketched out of people normally but also thought I'd ask. It's hard to gauge how close it actually is for me based on maps.

Thanks!

Irvine is literally one of the safest communities in the country, with heavy patrolling. Most flight crew walk to/ from the hotels. Like anywhere else, you need to be aware of your surroundings. Just be aware that the walk is longer than it seems.

You may wish to look into somewhere in Anaheim. I’ve seen the Hilton and Marriott go for around $100/night, including taxes and fees, via agencies like Priceline and Orbitz. Depending on the rates you’re getting, it may be worth it to do a double ride share.

My favorite Disneyland-area hotels include the Hotel FERA (Doubletree) Orange, and the Ayres Orange. The latter is relatively new and includes a delicious, high-quality breakfast. I’ve recommend it to plenty of friends and family through the years. The adjacent ALO Hotel is the older Ayres - smaller and older rooms but the same great breakfast. These properties can often be found for $100 to $125/night including taxes/ fees. They’re about two miles from Disneyland, next to a large hospital and outdoor mall.

Back when I lived in Irvine I would routinely see IPD respond with 4+ cop cars to minor fender benders because they were so bored.

But I'd also note that if you are not the right demographic, walking or even driving around Irvine at 11sh at night could also get you some extra undesirable attention from IPD as has happened to friends of mine.

I'd echo the advice find a cheaper hotel closer to Anaheim and just take a taxi there. The area around SNA is not particularly pedestrian friendly, and with how long of a walk it is to get out of the airport I wouldn't recommend walking with two young kids around there late at night.

The issue is SNA does not have many flights that late so not a good chance at a shuttle, the airport will be empty. As mentioned the walk is safe but you would have to walk past parking structures, not even sure what the path would be. My advice would take an UBER or taxi to a hotel closer to Disney, you will miss a lot of morning traffic.

As long as flights come in, they’ll be waiting.

The challenge in walking is that there’s only one enterance / exit for pedestrians and it can be confusing if you’ve never did it before. If you’re flying from Terminal C (mainly Southwest), you’re backtracking a bit as the exit is between A/B (the original terminals).

John Wayne airport is in Santa Ana, not Irvine. I used to live in Irvine and the area around the airport is not the same as being in Irvine. Like others have said, it is a mostly business area that is not pedestrian friendly. 10:30 will be one of the last flights of the day there (I think the latest you can land is 11:00). I once had a flight diverted to LAX because we had a small delay and it would put us landing past the curfew. There will still be Ubers at that time. You have to go outside to the upper level of the parking structure to get the Uber, just so you know.

John Wayne is mostly in Irvine and Costa Mesa. Pieces of it touch Newport Beach and Santa Ana. It was intentionally planned like this.

The area surrounding the entrance/ exit of the passenger terminals is Irvine. If you haven’t been to the area lately, most of the former commercial area surrounding the airport has been converted to housing, and there’s plans to convert several of the skyscrapers.

The area most definely has a heavy police presence. Ride shares to/from SNA can be pricy and most of the fare goes to the ride share company, not the driver. Many times we will walk across the street to El Torito. What we save dor the ride share, pays for our meal.

Thanks all. I'm going to switch to a hotel closer to Disneyland. Ubers will still be around around 11 pm at the airport right?
Holiday Inn Express off Manchester. less than a 10 minute walk to the security gate, continental breakfast, clean and rooms in the low $200s per night. Stayed 4 times here and it's a solid value.

I'm actually the most nervous about it arriving late. I fly from Seattle and Alaskan has been so bad my last multiple flights (with them, other airlines not at all) with delays and cancellations. I am only flying them to use up the last of my miles, had to use 160,000 of them after I said I'd never fly them again. 😄

I booked a new hotel closer to Disneyland that night and will switch to the DLH the next morning.

Thanks all for your advice!

We are getting in the weeds here but SNA actually doesn't border Santa Ana at all. It's technically in unincorporated OC and only assigned the SNA designation because Santa Ana is the county seat. The terminal side border is split about 50/50 between Irvine and Newport, and the runway side border is almost entirely Costa Mesa.
