At last night's Family Support Meeting, the officer in charge of "dealing" with us family members talked to us briefly about injury or GOD FORBID, the death of our Marine.
If there is an injury that requires hospitalization, we will be informed by this officer by telephone. If there would be a death, we would get the dreaded visit at our door. In the case of either injury or death, the military's time line is 8 hours. They want the family informed within that time frame. She told us that in today's age of email and satellite phones, the news gets back to the states and the officers here, almost immediately.
Not the kind of things we want to think about, but it helps to know the facts.

I pray you never get a phone call or visit.
