My bff went though Dunkin’ Donuts and we wanted to pay separately they would not let us my friend was not happy I told her my order was not important

She is like it’s the principle not your order they ended up letting us order separately

The funny thing is the week before they did not have a problem with us doing two separate orders

Was my friend right and saying it was the principle and not my order

Or was I being selfish by not thinking of others who might be in my shoes

The McDonald's I worked at in 1997 had a rule like that of one order per car. I know of a few drive ins that have that rule as well. It can really mess up the flow of the drive through to have multiple orders per vehicle.

I would rather carry extra cash and give it to the driver in that case easy enough to do my own math and give the driver what is due

Maybe this is to discourage the delivery orders created by uber and Lyft demand .
That Dunkin Donuts drive thru seems to be really long whenever I drive past the location near WDW.

I would think it would be easy enough for one person to pay and have the others Venmo their share to whoever paid. I don’t know how long it takes to process, but I know here it’s instantaneous for an e-transfer (basically the same thing..I think).

It's been possible in the past to pay separately in various drive-thru places but I think with mobile ordering and things like McDonalds using AI for ordering taking it is more convoluted.

As far as the topic of venmo, venmo is great but like any service it comes with risks. I would not trust doing venmo with my in-laws. They already have had issues with PayPal accounts being compromised and inability to understand how to correct that (like changing their passwords immediately).

Yeah, the way orders are typically (if I can use a technical term) "pipelined", it would probably mess up future orders or maybe lost orders.

At least indoors it's gotten a lot better with a separate pickup counter. I remember back when a typical fast food cashier handled everything including bagging, and it would slow things down immensely.

If you want separate orders go inside.
Can't here. Our first Dunkin Donuts opened 3 months ago. It is drive through only. I've never had more than one order in any car I have been in so no experience with this, but never heard of any such restriction.

Probably depends on how their order system is setup and the arrangement of taking orders. Some fast food places now have two lines for ordering so cars don't back up into the street causing congestion. I would imagine those probably aren't setup for separate orders since it would mess up the flow when paying and doing pickup.

If it is someplace you go frequently and you know they can't do this, then I would go inside and order that way. I don't see it as that big of deal either way. Couldn't your friend just look at the receipt and decide how much you owe her?

I've been able to do two orders previously, but that's because I ordered on the app ahead of time (and paid via the app) and then gave them the two order numbers to pick up.

We've never done two orders separately and expected to pay separately at the same window.

Except In-N-Out (a non-franchised fast food restaurant, primarily with locations in CA). They will actually let us do 3 separate orders in the same car :)

Weird. I don't like Drive Thru's and would likely not frequent a place that was drive thru only.

I haven't been, but I was surprised reading how it is laid out. To me the joy of a donut shop is going in and picking "one of those.....two of those". I guess you can't even see what their donut selection is, you just ask "do you have an old fashioneds? Any apple fritters?".
I don't buy donuts very often, like maybe once every couple of years and I prefer the Mom and Pop shops. In other cities I know some are big Dunkin Donuts fans, but I have never found their donuts or coffee to be anything special.
