I know many people here have posted about keeping a stack of $2 bills, and I wanted to share some interesting comments about that practice from someone on board a ship.

Also, tipping in “fun” or collector money is pointless. A $2.00 bill will not be exchanged by an exchange house in eastern Europe or the Philippines. Some crew offices won’t even take them.

...

I read some comments from a person who was going to experiment and see if crew would take a two dollar bill. Well they probably will, but if you want to experiment properly offer them a choice of a two dollar bill, or two one dollar bills I am betting they will take the ones. ;0) Also, if your going to offer two dollar bills versus a single one dollar bill, then you would have to ask the Crew Purser how many two dollar bills of yours he ended up with because the crew will go right down and exchange them for "real money"

Really the entire post is quite interesting and informative.

That IS really interesting. I would have never thought that people could/would give you only 75% of what the currency is worth because of being "old".

Its good to know, not that I was going to bring $2 bills, but I guess now I need to make sure the bills I do bring are in good condition. :rolleyes2

all the more reason to charge your tips to your stateroom ... (of course, we did tip a couple of extra dollars in cash to the room steward for teaching us how to make the towel buddies)

That is really interesting. We gave some to our server and assistant server, and they seemed to be thrilled with them. They said they hadn't seen them before and were going to keep them. It seemed genuine.

I tried to get some $2 bills for tips before our cruise, NOBODY at my bank had ever seen a $2 bill!!! They checked, and they can't even get them. Sort of like the dollar coin, the Sakaqweea (sp), only place we see them is our change machine in our lunch room gives the, and the vending machines take them.
But don't take those dollar coins to the casinos, THEY only use the larger Eisenhower dollar coins, or their own tokens which are the same large size.

Thanks for the interesting read. Now I can just picture ME "cleaning" money at the bank before our trip. I've been stashing all of my 1's and 5's and the occasional $10 for tips, but none of them are "mint" as I recieved them as change for a $20 myself.
