I found this elsewhere, and thought I would share it. Now we know why Mickey, Minnie and parades aren't in VMK!

One of the more interesting examples of cross-world promotion is Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK). VMK, originally conceived as part Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration, was found to be so successful that nearly two years and over two million characters later, it remains a popular destination for teens and tweens.

Each avatar receives a guest room and the kids have proven to be very creative. They have baseball leagues even though there’s no way to swing a bat in-world! Roger Holzberg, VP/Creative Director of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, warns that one has to be open to brand mixing when kids are allowed to build their own rooms with any virtual items they desire.

These items can be gotten in-world, but the most valuable items are from outside VMK. One pair of virtual green flip-flops eventually sold on eBay for $1020. Through various quests, the activities on VMK integrate with those in the theme parks.

What was the impetus for creating Virtual Magic Kingdom?
Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) came out of a desire to extend our brand relevancy into the teen/tween market. Traditionally, the Disney brand begins to fall off for boys at about 9 or 10 years old and girls a bit older. Those older kids tend to be attracted to our diverse and exciting theme park products once they know what's available to them, but until VMK we had no real channel to talk to them. Tweens don't really watch TV commercials or read print ads; their channel of choice is the internet.
Now we have them playing in our brand, playing in a world that they think is cool, for over 80 minutes per day on average. As a parent of two teenagers, I like to say "teens and tweens don't usually determine where a family takes a vacation, but they definitely determine where a family does not take one," and that's where VMK comes in. The majority of our players tell us that due to playing VMK, they are more likely to go to a Disney theme park.

How does Disney merge virtual activities with real-world activities?
For us, VMK is a larger play cycle than just an online game. Guests can play VMK for free online, then get excited about our theme parks. Once they're at Disneyland or Disney World, we can give them free rewards to use when they go home to the game, where they can show off their exclusive virtual items only available at the parks. Our goal is to drive guests from our virtual world to our real theme parks and back again.
We have a number of different types of quests, some of which are completely online, some completely in-park, and some that bridge the two. The highest conversion rates are on our web 1uests, which begin in the game and extend out into other websites; our completion rate on many of these exceeds 90%.
We also have quests that can be printed at home then played and redeemed in our theme parks, as well as quests that are completely in-park. As a reward for completing quests in-park, we give guests real-world trading cards with codes to redeem for VMK virtual rewards.
We keep the content and format of these varied, from single-attraction quests that entertain guests while they're in-queue to quests that span entire lands and even multiple theme parks. Families typically play more than one quest at a time, with the whole family participating in answering questions.
What was VMK’s strategy to reach the tween market?
Our senior brand leaders at Disney allowed us to be "market" vs. "marketing" driven - and really let us build the world for our targeted audience. Tweens told us they didn't want the "Fab 5" (Mickey, Minnie, etc.) characters in VMK, so they aren't there; they told us "no parades", so there are none.
We launched with a threshold of entertainment and games, diverse interactive versions of classic attractions like Pirates (as a multi-player battle game), Jungle Cruise (a photo safari) and Haunted Mansion (a ghost catching game), then gave players the ability to build out their own rooms, spaces, and rides with props and items bought (with free credits) or acquired through quests or promotions.

Mal I had the exact same reaction... Who Told them no Goofy, et al?!? And I guess my cash means bubkiss. GMTA. Heh.

I followed the link (yeah Dare, great find!) and read the whole article. The idea of people living virtual lives so extensively (ie making it more than "just a game") both excites and scares me.

As a techophile I get my 'geek on' thinking of the computing power and programming involved in staging a virtual world. I think "How cool is it we can interact in VR!" How we have access to the World. Things and info we couldn't get, had to really hunt for, or took a while can now be aquired quickly and cheaply. I love how the old map lines are removed in cyberspace.

But then thinking "cyberspace" I think "cyberpunk" and get all fearful of Controls that could be put in place by The Man. Dystopian rule. People linked uncontrolably to The System (ala Matrix). Etc.

The Intarwebs - Eden or Hades? lol Just like the real world it's a little of both I suppose.

hummm..since I play way over 80 minutes a day...you think we have some kind of say so since we tend to have more money than the tended audience! :rotfl: oops...thats right our money isn't any good! ;)
 
Well what kind of kids are they not to want the Fab 5???:confused: I can understand parades not being wanted but the Fab 5!!!! That is it! I want our next land to be Toon Town and them to be there for us to meet and take pics with. :cloud9: :goodvibes :dance3:

LOL...that is what I was thinking. Who in the heck PAYS to go to these parks. I know for sure it's not the kids. I am also very curious to how many adults play VMK. That would be an interesting poll. :thumbsup2

VMK is definitly geared more towards the marketing side. Movie Promotions, DVD releases, the theme parks, etc. And given that it is "free" (only costs your time! Except for those pin's you have to buy to get the cards...:rolleyes1) I'm not surprised at the marketing content. BUT I wish they would incorporate more "Classic Disney" into the game -- Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Chip, Dale, etc. A nice start maybe with Alice and the Fantasy land, but I'd love to see more down the road.

I wonder what the percentage is of adults playing the game?
Do tweens and teens really not like Mickey? :sad1:

Maybe someone could start a poll that asks if they'd like to see Mickey in the Park ... :idea:
 
Interesting article. It would be great to see more sponsors such as Kellogg's. How about Coca Cola. Epcot sells Coca Cola shirts and other Coke items, why not VMK? Goofer might even change her Mickey shirt and put on one of the Coke shirts :rotfl:

Yes we adults are not part of the target audience but I think we deserve to voice our opinions. :rolleyes1

I think this is a good poll for the VMK home page. Do you want the FAB 5 in VMK? Yes/No. If yes, then follow up with another poll asking which character would you most want to see added to VMK?
 
I'm glad there are other adults who play because I would feel even more silly playing VMK after reading the article. Of course, I am technically still a teen for two more months.

I think VMK was a great marketing idea. I don't care that it's an advertisement for Disney parks, because it's free! (unless you want to buy green flip flops for $1000, but I sure wouldn't)

Oh, pooh, that is just the tip of the iceberg! When virtual items were regularly bought and sold on eBay, infernos would go for $500 a piece, green flips for over a $1000, sparrow for as much as $300 but settled down at $75. I bought a number of virtual items from eBay before everybody went ballistic about it, and then eBay decided to stop selling ALL virtual items, for ALL online games. I even bought gold for my husband's World of Warcraft game.

Some were grownups buying stuff for their kids, but I assume that most of the big ticket items were grownups either in the "I have to have it" phase, or others who bought it then re-listed it an hour later for $25 more. And it sold again. And then that person sold it for $25 more, etc.

This is why Narnia pieces, POTC furniture and posters, and water slide up and down pieces are not tradeable in VMK. People would sell huge lots of them on eBay, and VMK tried to crack down on that by making them untradeable. Then they started selling the codes. Face it, e-commerce and computer savvy folks are just like kids: The harder you clamp down, the more creative ways they come up with to get around the system!

There's the eBay history in a nutshell. You can still buy the physical cards on eBay. A set of stitch cards with unused codes goes for between $175 and $225. The green flips that article references were the highest priced VMK items I ever saw. Two days later another set went for $750!
 
Oh my gosh i would love to see Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto in the parks, also parades. Who told them that? Guess i did not get the memo.
 
Yes Dara this is nice find and I really enjoyed the link. I also would agree with who do they is paying for the tickets to the parks and all the stuff they buy there or the things that they did buy on ebay!! Just to bad we aren't part of the target group!

And oh yes..I would love to see more Mickey and Minnie and Donald..Goofy in the game! That would be fantastic! :yay:
 
Madness. It's a sad state of affairs when The Fab Five are not wanted in the Magic Kingdom. :sad2:

This article is pretty old, so I'm thinking they MIGHT have a change of heart on this issue in the future (crossing my fingers for Toontown to be added to VMK!). I don't know where the heck they got these tweens they polled...did they only poll ones who hate Disney??? Aye yi yi!

VMK, if you're reading this...let it be known that the MAJORITY of us who devote so much time into the game WANT OUR FAB FIVE! :mickeyjum ::MinnieMo :donald: :goofy: pluto:
 
if you really look in the game you can find two of the fab5

well just mickey's feet unde the cutain in the merchantile shop

and at central plaza you see donald duck walk by the upstais window in the building with the food cart next to it.

anyone see any other "hidden" fab 5 guys???
