hello all,

i have never rented out my points before but as i will not be going to disney until 2006 i would like to rent out my points.

my question is this:

is it better to book a vacation for thanksgiving or some other hold to get date and then open that time to rent or buy?

or

is it better to just rent out the points at a certain price for people?

next question is how do you go an rent out the points?

i see people put on the board this many points for rent, but how do they book the vacation for the other idividual? is it under the owner of the points name or the person who rented the points?

i will be looking at renting about 300 points for the beach club .. as i can still book thanksgiving 2005 if needed.

thanks for any help

Speaking strictly for myself, I certainly hope that you would not do this. While one room is just a drop in the bucket, remember that by doing as you describe above you are taking a room out of the system that could otherwise be booked by a member rather than a renter. I have nothing against non-members who rent points, but I'd rather see those of us who paid thousands of dollars up front have the best shot at a room.

Logistically, I think you'll be better off just offering the points to anyone who is interested. If you were to book a single room for Thanksgiving, you'd have to find a non-member interested in the exact dates, resort and room size that you reserve. It could take months for an interested party to materialize.

If you want to just rent the points and be done with it, post on the rent/trade board the number of points you have and cost, and I'm sure you'll start getting nibbles almost immediately.

I'd just offer the points but feel you have no obligation to save a room for another members, regardless of the reason you intend to use it. Everyone one who owns at a single resort has the same opportunity to reserve at the 11 month window.

---->If you have nothing against renters, why would it bother you if the OP offered a specific timeframe, or just offered "a room out of the system that could otherwise be booked by a member rather than a renter" ?
For that matter, isn't the OP who also "paid thousands of dollars" entitled to make this decision?

Because people who do this tend gravitate toward high volume periods--booking rooms months in advance with no intention of using the room themselves. I have no problem with people who reserve rooms for renters on a first-come, first served basis. I DO have a problem with people who pre- book rooms and hold those rooms hostage, with no confirmed occupant, while other members are unable to get the room they desire.

That's my $.02 and whether you recognize the distinction or not, I'm not going to explain it further.

OP asked for advice. I offered my advice. End of story.

I had points to rent out. I listed on the rent/trade board at one price for "rental" and cheaper price for "transfer" (since I wouldn't have to be "managing" the ressie). My points went SO fast. I think if you just list the points...you'll have NO problem renting them.

Beca-
If you don't mind - how much difference did you list the points for with a rent or transfer option. I may need to "rent" some of my points and I definitely think it sounds like a good idea not to have to do the reservation part but don't know what the acceptable rate would be.
Oh yes - Have a wonderful trip!
Thanks

1) I would
. . . book a holiday or high-use period.
. . . advertise the week on ebay or DIS and see how much it brings
. . . advertise the points instead of a specific week at $9-$11 per point
. . . rent to the higher bidder

2) A holiday (eg Thanksgiving) should command a higher rent.
3) You can always fall-back to renting points.
4) These are your points, so get as much as you can.
5) Being generous to others is fine, but not when renting.

NOTE: Some may sneer at you for booking/reserving a prime time, but they are your points and you have the right and ability to book and/or use them whenever you wish.

I did $10 per point if they rented or just took part of my points (even if they were transferred), and $9.50 per point if they took ALL of my points, and did a straight transfer. I figured that was worth it to me, because that way I had NO points left over to go to waste.

The buyer JUMPED at this. It really was easy.

Good luck,
