Do the new interactive wands do anything outside the parks? For example, can I do Lumos Maxima at home? Thanks!

Just a guess, but I'm going to say, "No."

The chip in the wand interacts with readers in specific spots around Universal, which are marked by plaques in the pavement. Waving your wand then triggers an "effect" (such as puppets dancing, or buckets tipping, etc...) which has been built into that particular spot. Your home is not equipped with readers, nor are are there any effects set up in your home waiting to be triggered by the readers.

If you're very knowledgeable about this sort of thing, you might be able to build and program something that would interact with your wand. But I haven't a clue about that sort of thing.

On the other hand, I do believe ThinkGeek sells a remote control wand for your TV.

Edit: Yep, here it is! http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/cf9b/

Haven't been to Universal since right before HP opened at IOA. I'm going in August & know my daughter will want one. Can anyone tell me how much they are so I can add it to my budget. Are they all the same or do they have different varieties?
Thanks. :goodvibes

From what I have read, the wands with map are going for about $45. The map alone looks really incredible online!

DD's with tax came out to just under $48. I think that's about $10ish more than a regular wand.

Thanks. Are there many places around the park that they interact with or just in Diagon Alley?

The wands are $44.95. With the AP discount it was cheaper.

They do nothing outside the park. There are interactive places in both DA and Hogsmeade. The map is to show you where, how, and which spells to cast. :thumbsup2

We purchased 2 and just under $100. They each come with a map of where to find the interactive stations in both Harry potter sections which are the only areas they work in.

You would think universal would take advantage of the opportunity to profit and sell items that could be purchased to take home and interact with the wands. Snow globes, pictures, trinkets that sit on your shelves.. Anything that requires electricity or batteries could possibly be compatible. Just think of the revenue that could generate!

I LOVE this idea! Surely UO has thought of this? It could be a huge moneymaker!

:cheer2:

Don't really know how the wands work but in the areas that are interactive there is a sensor with 4 red LEDs and a black circle. It's the size of a baseball. This is what they tell you to point at. So whatever technology is on the receiving end would have to be incorporated into a bought gift. I think that is the biggest issue that will make this not happen.
