interactive cue: pass or not?

You're in line and get to the interactive portion of the cue. The families ahead have kids that stop and play. The line keeps moving ahead. Do you stop and wait for the family ahead? Or do you pass by? Should you expect a negative reaction? I never want to be a jerk, but should I have to wait?

Good question. The Winnie the Pooh ride at MK immediately comes to mind. For this reason we try to FP that one with my kids lol!! I think it would depend on the situation... I personally would tell others to pass me if my kids kept playing while the line was moving. I wouldn’t expect the line to wait for me. But no clue what the etiquette is.

How long have they been stopped? I wait but I’ve never been in a situation were the kids play/ parents wait for an exceptionally long time. With the exception on Snow White Mine Train but that was a long wait anyway so it didn’t matter.

I would go "mam or sir the lines moving are you staying ?" And if they understand me I'm sure they will say either "woops" and get the kids moving or " go on ahead sorry" if my attempts to alert said guest go un answered I would move up.. there not paying attention anyway.

It depends on how good the interactions are and how many more minutes/hours do we expect on this line:

-If the gap in the line is behind a crowd of people and a 45 minute wait, it isn't going to change what time we board the ride much. We'll just catch back up to where we would've been in 2 minutes anyway. So I'd wait it out.

-Except for some rides, a large percent of guests on line would like a chance to interact with that part of the cue too. If they kept taking longer than their welcome share of time then I might go around them to help restore the interactive cue's pace.

For me if the line is clearly moving along, as to actually going to almost the loading area I would ask if they're moving or not and go behind if they want to stay and play. If the line is clearly not moving that much i just wait
It's like when a car goes in front of me in heavy traffic, how much time did that car really save if we're still stuck in traffic?
The interactive queues are designed for heavy traffic, you're stopped, you play with the things that are around you

Exactly this!

When in the interactive queues, and the queue is moving forward but the kids want to play some more, it would courteous to let the people behind you move ahead. I like the Pooh queue because it allows the kids to go off and play a bit, but the adults can stay in the queue and still see the kids.

The worst is 7DMT - we do pass people there. The queue is wide enough that the flow just goes around those that stop to get all the barrel things spinning, for example.

I would probably stop and wait, unless the people behind me started passing me. Then I would walk around them. My kids love to point out when people aren't moving up in line.

I agree 100%.

If I were interacting with the elements in the queue, I wouldn’t expect people behind me to wait. It’s all about entertainment and becoming immersed in Disney, but I’d never want to slow someone down.

All depends on the style of the queue. Highly interactive, like the earlier parts of the Winnie the Pooh queue, where the kids have room to run around, I'd probably just go around without even saying anything. I consider those types of areas as 'sidetracks'. In those areas, it's not really going around, it's more like the other people stepped out of line. Partially interactive, like the later parts of the Winnie the Pooh queue, with the honey walls, I'd wait it out a bit, and then ask if they're moving up, if they mind if we go around if the kids want to play, or a gentle reminder that the line has moved on. Something like that.

Basically, it comes down to whether or not you're obviously going around. If you have to squeeze, then no. If it's like they've stepped out of line, then yes. And if it's questionable, like the barrels in 7DMT, then maybe, depending on the exact feel of the situation.

Interesting...leaving a gap in the line doesn't actually slow you down as long as you catch back up by the boarding. So the need to pass is really just an internal urging (which we all feel ) or a desire to actually get slightly ahead by passing the family who stopped. I had an interesting occurrence at EE about a month ago where the line wasn't terribly long (30 minutes) but wasn't spread across the full width of the corridor. A woman and her child started pushing through the line and we asked if she was with a group ahead of us...she said no, stepped to the open side of the corridor turned around and said the announcement just said "to fill all open spots" and just walked past the formed line and around several corners...I think she jumped close to 50-60 people. The line was very orderly and everyone knew right where they stood -filling the gaps wasn't going to make the wait any less - except in her case she chose to use the direction and open space to jump the line and increase the wait for everyone else...

I wonder if she got confused with show type situations where cast members practically plead with people to completely fill the pre-show room.

Because in those cases I've heard ex-cast members (including some on the Dis) state that if people stop dead in the middle of the room, you can absolutely walk around them right up to the front of the room.

Maybe this woman heard similar things but applied it in a different situation? Or maybe she was indeed just using the directions to justify line skipping. which seems silly in a relatively short, moving line. :)

I let people pass, I give a hand gesture, if my kid wants to play with an interactive feature.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying that the polite thing would be for the family that has stopped should invite others to go by them but I do not think you should just pass by. At least not without checking in with them first to give them the opportunity to hold their spot in line. You can have the best of intentions but unfortunately others may not be able to put themselves in your shoes and could get upset.

It depends on the setup & what the line is like.

Like Space Mountain for example if I know it's only a 10 minute wait in the boarding area & that walk is rather long so if people are stopping to play games & there is no one to be seen ahead of them I keep on walking past.

Now if there is an actual line & it's not like walking past is going to do anything except move me up 3 people then I wait. But after a few minutes if the line is moving along again they need to either decide if they are staying to play or going to keep up with the line.

I've never been in a queue where anyone stopped for a significant amount of time. I mean I guess if your kids want to play for a while in 7DMT or Winnie the Pooh then you should let others go ahead of you but if the kids stop for a minute, passing people isn't going to get you on the ride any faster- you'll still be waiting in line just 1 family ahead.

Just ask if it's ok to move past them. They'll either move or let you pass.
