I'm not sure if I should post this question here or on the budget board.

We have a 2001 30ft Jayco Eagle Travel Trailer. Currently we're insured with State Farm for a cost of $132.00/year with a $500.00 deductible. The agent said that this only covers the structure of the trailer and if any of the contents are damaged/lost, we would also have to file a Home Owners claim for personal property (a $1,000.00 deductible).

I'm wondering if this is a good deal or what agencies others use that may give us a better deal or coverage.

Thanks!

You might want to look around for companies that specialize in RV insurance. Very often these policies include both the "shell" and the contents on one policy. We have Progressive on our Motorhome and it's $400/year w/$500 ded. They write special policies for RV's. There are many others -- I hear good things about GMAC, Explorer RV, and Foremost, as well. Prices will depend on where you are and what you're insuring, but I hear these have competitive rates. They were more than Progressive for us, but YMMV.

When we were first looking we found that several companies would only cover the "car" portion of the MH -- the exterior. Usually these were places that specialize more in car insurance like State Farm, Allstate, Geico, etc. Contents would have to go on our homeowners. We wanted to keep the 2 separate so that if something happened to the MH while we were on the road, our homeowners policy wouldn't go up as a result.

We also have Jayco Eagle Travel Trailer...2001. We are insured with Progressive..we got it while researching on RV.NET. They insure the contents and the sturcture..and offer a full replacement coverage. They seem to be more familiar with RV insurance than Geico(our cars are insured with them) is.

Okay just checked with Progressive...didn't have the Policy renewal yet..and you got me thinking. We're good though...does't renew until May 26th..but asked about our rate and coverage. We are in NY paying $300 a year..we have a Liability... 250.00 deductible and a $500. deductible on collision. Includes $2000.00 for personal items.. emergency vacation ins. and also full replacement value and road side assistance.

$302/year for our 30' Puma TT with Progressive. It also covers contents, trip interruption stuff (hotels, etc.), and even pays full purchase price if our TT is destroyed during the first five years of ownership.:thumbsup2

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like State Farm is a good price. They quoted me $185 for a $100 deductible, $161 for $250, $132 for $500 and $98 for $1000 deductible.

I hope that we'll never need to file a claim but I'm not sure that I'd want to pay the $1000 if we did. We'll probably stay with the $500.

Thanks Again!

Just make sure they offer the full replacement value..and the vacation interuption insurance. If for instance you break down..or your trailer is totalled and you need to stay in a hotel or make arrangements to get back home. Or if your trailer is in an accident you want to make sure your personal belongings are covered. We had friends whose trailer went on fire(problem with the switch from propane to electric..long story..and another post)...but it wasn't even while camping right on the driveway. They had it with the same company that insured their home..and had ALOT of trouble being reinmbursed. When they finally got a new trailer..they went with a company that was more familiar with RV's.
