Here are so many posts out there I am confused. Just me and my niece with no known issues. Who should I look at. PM if want

Go to ***************** and you can compare policies. We ONLY get insurance if we are traveling very far from home and where it would be extremely costly to get home if there was an emergency. For a week in the Caribbean, it's simply not worth the cost for us.

Opinions vary on travel insurance, but personally I wouldn't travel outside the US without it. Not so much for the risk of having to cancel the trip, but for medical issues that could arise. Even with no known medical issues, anyone can be injured or get seriously ill.

In many cases US medical insurance won't pay for care outside the US, or pays very little. You will want to check your insurance and see how much you would be covered internationally. And in the unlikely event someone had to medically evacuated back home it could be financially devastating, we're talking bills running well into six figures. Not worth the risk to me.

We can't post the links but if I wanted to INSURE MY TRIP (dot com), I would find a good travel insurance shopping site ;), and not go with what the cruise line offers.

Thanks a bunch!!

We have had to use trip insurance twice during cruises: One time we had to cancel and one time we had to leave ship early due to a death in the family at home. Both times the insurance company treated us well and backed everything: Unused cruise, Unused flights, new flights, rental cars, hotel rooms, taxis, food,--just keep your receipts!

Remember that your personal health insurance may not cover everything that happens overseas. If you are evacuated by helicopter from the ship, I have heard the cost could be in the tens of thousands of dollars!

What ever insurance you get, make sure it includes not only trip cancellation, but trip interruption as well. Remember if you miss the ship and booked your own air, you are responsible for getting to the next port to get on the ship. Trip insurance with an interruption clause will pay for the extras to get to the ship.

This. Even if one is willing and able to suck up the cost of a lost vacation and potential unplanned travel expenses home, few are likely able to absorb emergency medical costs. You can get medical-only coverage (it's relatively cheap, especially if you're young). I'd never go out of the country without it, cruise or no cruise. We buy it even for Disney visits and long weekends to Montana for boarder-shopping. Do try insuremytrip; they'll have what you need.
