Who has bought trip insurance for renting DVC points and/or the YES individual enrollment tickets? How much did you pay? What company did you go through?
Did you get the cancel for any reason option? What percent of your cost did you get back? I would never go with either of these options without any insurance, especially in October. Please give me any details as you can.

I haven't ever bought travel ins for any other vacation but I am going to for our next one. Right now I plan on a yes class/tickets and I think renting a condo offsite. Since both are non refundable I feel we need coverage. I plan on getting something that will pay as much back for any reason. My grandfather is 90 and both sets of parents are getting up there, and it will be hurricane season. I figure the knowledge of having it will make me feel less stressed.

I hope someone can chime in with good info but I saw a list the other day that people were talking about travel insurance in general. I couldn't find it though, sorry.

Hey were in the same boat. Pre-existing coverage is needed and I would like to be able to get 100% back for any reason.

Nice! I can see you're new here. I was asking a question. Do you know the answer?

Were you trying to ask "Are YES tickets refundable?". If so you should have worded it that way. Also they answered. Yes, they are non-refundable.

dvcrequest.com (a website for renting DVC points) recommend using insuremytrip.com to buy your own trip insurance. You enter your information and they show a bunch of insurances and policies for you to compare. The problem isn't in choosing a policy. The problem arises when you need to actually make a claim on the insurance. I don't know if the would consider YES tickets to be event tickets and whether they would be covered under conventional travel insurance.

TBH, if you need a "cancel for any reason" option, buying YES tickets and renting DVC points is not the way you want to vacation. You're better off getting a package through Disney and dealing with their more lenient cancellation policy. Buying non-refundable park tickets and renting a timeshare from the owner is not a good idea for people who want to be able to cancel for no reason and get their money back.

Maybe the package deal would be better for me. But dag gum, the savings you can get when combining both of these.:headache:

Does anyone know what company to enter for trip insurance for "tour operator" for DVC points?

Maybe this should just to other?:confused3

It's not run by a company. You are doing a private timeshare rental. Even if you are renting DVC points that is a private timeshare rental.

I'd call the company to find out which to pick based off that.

I absolutely agree. The cost of "cancel for any reason" insurance is VERY expensive. It's better to pay for a room-only reservation (five-day in advance cancellation, and the worst they could do is take one night's deposit, anyway) and buy your tickets when you arrive or from a discounter who takes returns. Even airline tickets can be re-used (for a fee, of course). That's exactly what I have done and I carry no trip insurance. I only insure if it's a massive nonrefundable cost incurred far in advance, like a cruise.

Just be aware - the travel insurance companies I called would not cover a DVC rental. They do not cover time shares and this is what DVC is considered. This is one drawback to DVC rentals - your plans have to be set in stone, for the most part. I do know if my plans have to be changed, the points I've 'rented' are mine and would hopefully be able to reschedule before the points expire.

I did ask about the non-refundable YES tickets, and was told that would be covered under travel insurance.

Those points might be "yours" to re-schedule before they expire but there will be heavy restrictions on when they can be used if you cancel at the last minute.

Any points from a reservation that is canceled with 30 days or less remaining until arrival will go into a "holding account" for the owner. Those points will have a 60-day booking window. A reservation using those points can only be made for a stay that is 60 days or less from the date that the reservation is made. This makes it very hard to find what you want at the resort of your choice. It is also possible that the number of points needed for the new reservation will not be the same as those needed for the old reservation. You might end up with too few points to complete the reservation and the DVC owner may not have more points to offer to you.

That's a big risk. DVC owners can get travel insurance for their points. The cost is $79 per Use Year, which means that it covers all of their points from a single year's points. If their reservation uses points from more than one Use Year, they have to buy the insurance for each Use Year used. I don't think that this option would be extended to renters.

I was able to insure my Thanksgiving week trip that I booked through the DVC store with no problems. I used insuremytrip.com

I looked into that exact thing and couldn't find a way to do it.

The kind of coverage you are looking for is travel insurance for a private vacation rental. As the renter, you are protecting the $$ you paid for the room rental. This is different than for a DVC owner, who would be protecting the value of his/her points.

This article discusses the option: http://community.homeaway.com/docs/DOC-1623

Good luck -- Suzanne

The points you rented are never "yours". They always belong to the member from the contract they purchased. You may have some agreement with the member to try to reschedule if possible, but it's not always possible.

What I meant by the points are now 'mine' is, I paid for their use from the DVC owner and if I ever had to cancel, he is not responsible for refunding my money - so, those points are mine if I can find a time to reschedule before the points expire(which the DVC owner gave me the date they are good until). This is why I go into thinking that renting DVC points as non-refundable.
