I just returned 2 weeks ago and had to use my medical insurance for the first time. Following the directions of the insurance company I called there 1-800 number prior to seeking treatment. They arranged for a doctor to come to my hotel room to see me, that doctor arranged for a precription to be delivered to my room. I was responsible to pay the $38 for the meds (which will be re-imbursed) and thats it.
As someone who sells insurance at CAA daily I can tell you, not all policies are created equal. As well 95% of the complaints we get are from the people with the glazed look on their faces saying yeah yeah whatever as you are trying to explain the conditions and limitations. Then when they need the insurance they don't have a clue as to what they need to do or what they are covered for.
Like anything when buying do your homework. Price should not be the sole factor in buying insurance. I for one believe RBC to be about the best there is (do not sell RBC at CAA anymore btw). We sell manulife at CAA and it also seems to be comparable. When purchasing cancellation insurance keep in mind it does not cover change of mind. It is cancellation for valid and approved reasons. Some will cover for loss of job as well. No insurance policy will cover a pre existing condition, some will if a minimum stability period has been reached.
Know what you are buying, review it when you get home...have questions call and ask them. At CAA we will refund the policy prior to trip...take it home read through it...see stipulations you don't agree with, cancel and get a refund. People will say all the time it is too much hassle for a $20 travel medical policy...too many questions, too much paperwork....go to the states and get in a serious accident...that $20 could have saved you a million.
