Hi there. It's been 10 years since my DH and I have flown. We're going to WDW the end of Sept with our 2 girls. DH is diabetic. Will we be able to carryon a small cooler/ ice packs for his insulin? I didn't know what the regulations were since 9/11

I've made our ADR around lunch, thinking we'd leave his insulin at POR. There is one night (MNSSHP) that he will have to carry his insulin with him....

How do you folks handle situations like this? Thanks so much for your time and valuable input!!!!!

Cheers!

We carry our insulin in a lunchbox with gel packs on the plane with us. We always announce it tot he screener and they have never questioned.

Many folks have recommended Frio packs for carrying insulin in the parks. I understand they work very well. We used our regular pack (insulated but no ice) when we were in WDW (in July/Aug heat) and had no issue with the insulin being overheated.

When we were on shots, I prefer to keep DS's insulin with us in case our plans changed.

Medical supplies like insulin can be brought thru security and on the plane without problem. I can't post a link right now, but if you check the disABILITIES FAQs thread, one post in that thread is about airtravel and includes information about carrying 'medical liquids ' on the plane.

I agree with the other poster about bringing insulin into the park. Having it gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of changing your plans. Many people like the Frio containers for keeping insulin cool. You can also choose to store it in First Aid.

We just did this in May and had no problems at all. they totally took apart our c pap machines but left the insulin alone.....I did , however, carry a letter from my Doc stating what it was for.

They were much more interested in our nebulizer also. Did not even ask 1 question about the insulin.

I've had no problems with a small cooler and ice for my unopened insulin and Byetta. I just tell the screener what is in the cooler and they send it through the X-Ray. No one has ever even opened it up to look. I suspect they see lots of insulin on ice!

I carry my insulin and Byetta into the parks with me. Neither require refrigeration once they are in use. But if it is hot, they will get too hot. So I use a Frio pack to hold them. If it is the cooler months I just carry them without any cooler. I wouldn't use a Frio to keep my unopened insulin and Byetta safetly refrigerated but it does a good job of keeping my in use pens from getting overheated.

I have a letter from my doctor saying I need to travel with sharps as well. I've never been asked to produce it but I figure it doesn't hurt to have it ready.

You should be fine w/ the insulin on the plane, just let the security people know about it.

Take your insulin w/ you to the parks and leave it in first aid. I would carry an ice pack of some sort w/ you in case you have to go for a while w/out having it in first aid. My DS is on the pump, but we took 2 full pump changes and the insulin w/ us everyday to the parks and left it all in first aid. They were very nice there and it was nice knowing it was there if we needed it and that we would only have to interupt our park time enough to go to first aid vs having to go back to our resort. (Do be sure to check the closing times for first aid, just to be on the safe side. We never had any problem w/ it and stayed late several nights.)

i would not consider touring the parks without carrying the insulin and glucose meter with me. I know it's a pain to carry along if he doesn't normally. The extra exercise from all the walking and dealing with the heat will cause your body to react differently than a normal day. You need to be able to test when he feels "off" and be able to quickly treat a high or a low. WDW messed me up on our first visit, I had several unexpected lows.

Traveling by plane with insulin is not a big deal - just declare the liquid medication to the tsa agent at security. Please also make sure you read the 3-1-1 rules applying to liquids in carryons. Liquid medication is exempt from this rule, but all other liquids/gels are not.

Havea great trip!
