After reading luciloo's thread for the nearest Publix to her villa, it got me thinking - dangerous, i know, no need to call the fire brigade, it's smoke of the thought process...

Which US supermarket do you prefer, and why? Ignoring distance from where you're staying, why do you choose that one instead of another? Never had to do a full shop over there before (hotel with CS and TS restaurants last time), so I was just planning to go into the walmart down the road, but the other major 'brands' are all within a few minutes of each other.....

We choose Publix because :

1. There is a vast range of products available like a UK supermarket.
2. The fresh produce such as bakery/cakes etc are very good
3. Value for money
4. Many stores within easy reach from most locations
5. Having been in all the stores around the 192 area, I know where everything is - which is a big advantage when doing a 'big shop'
6. Open at 7am 7 days a week.

Never been a big Walmart fan, may be good for many things but food in my opinion, better sticking to Publix.

Used to go to Gooding's many years ago, have not tried the 24 hour one on the 192, I would expect quality wise it may be better but would also be more expensive too so I will stick with good old Publix.

Blimey look at me writing about supermarkets, I will be watching GMTV next

Publix.... anthing other than Winn Dixie,,,, oops I left my card at home, now price gauged me... Publix all the way.

I kind of like Target, or probably Super Target.
Plus they sponsor "Speedy" Dan Wheldon....I'm probably on my own with this one, but I often direct my spends towards brands that sponsor things I like or dislike....for example, theres no way AIG will get a penny off me now, yet I now find I can consider a Vodaphone purchase again.

We like both Publix and Albertsons for when in Florida, the range of foods are good and the prices are very good. As for West Coast Albertsons and also Safeway/Vons are good, the veg/fruit display at Safeway was tip top in June :)

My preference would be Walmart. We don't do any food shopping at the supermarkets, except for Lays Chips  I could walk round Wamart for hours. First visit of a trip I usually spend about $300 :)

Only ever been to a Publix during our Towncar Transfer grocery stop en route from the airport to our resort. I think it was close to Seaworld.

Seemed pretty nice and very much like a small UK supermarket. We only bought room snacks and drinks though :)

I like Albertsons because their liquor store is the only place we can get Bols Butterscotch liquer!

We always go to Publix but I'll admit that's probably because it is literally next door to our resort, we park there to go to the Denny's that's basically in their car park on the first night, then drop in to get our shopping.

We went to a Walmart last year and it just blew my mind, it was so large. I didn't like it much, felt too big and wierdly sterile. Reminded me of ASDA over here (which would be right as ASDA's now owned by them) and I don't really like ASDA. Publix just felt more "homely"!!

We prefer Publix. We used the Goodings on Idrive our first trip and couldn't understand how locals could afford to eat! Also, DW can't survive without Robinsons orange juice :thumbsup2

We always use Publix seem to have a better choice of fresh goods and you can buy squash :sunny:

Publix gets our vote, then its target or super target. Then suprisingly its the onsite hess garage dont have to travel far if staying ostite for coke, beer and krispie kream dodunts. There prices match supermarkets
Have done hess when we havent a car, when we visit Dontown disney get of bus at plesure island and walk (3 min from buss stop) no problem

Keep in mind that each area of the US seems to have a different set of grocery stores. Publix is only in the SouthEast. Then you have Tops, Safeway or Vons, Cub Foods or Rainbow Foods in Minnesota, Food Lion, Winn Dixies, Albertsons, Kroger, Wegmans, Piggly Wiggly, "HEB" in Texas...there are tons of them. Here we have Sobey's, and Safeway (funny, because there Safeway isn't in the states surrounding us...), plus Costco, Walmart, etc.

Publix for groceries and Super Target for everything else :thumbsup2

If location was no consideration, then I'd choose Albertsons (think Waitrose, M&S). As location is the primary consideration: Publix (Tesco, Sainsbury's) I don't like Walmart (Asda), Winn Dixie or Goodings.

Super Target for us - their bakery section is yummy. Unfortunately it's not close enough for day to day stuff so we tend to go to Publix when we run out of stuff

:rotfl: :thumbsup2

Personally, its Publix everytime for me.

WalMart needs a day out - usually with disastrous consequences for the bank balance.

I'm surprised my marriage has lasted as long as it has, considering my wife contibuted a Sharp video player to the matrimonial home and bought me a One To One mobile phone one christmas.

Albertsons because there is never anyone there when I go and it reminds me of the old IGA grocery stores in Canada when I was growing up :)

But we spent obscene amounts of money at Walmart and Target...
