Inspired by the engagement ring thread: Anyone "upgraded" their diamond later?

I would trade mine in and get an upgrade :)
I have my original 1/3 carat. but it has been reset and added onto a couple of times, so is really not the 'original' anymore. I don't wear it anyway. I wear the three stone past, present, future that DH got me a couple of years ago.
I always wanted a marquise cut BIG stone :) so.... I would gladly trade mine in.
It does hold a bit of nostalgia I guess, but it would still be special if I traded it in. I haven't ask DH how he would feel about it though! LOL. I never wear my 'original' ring so I don't think he would care, really.
My original 1/3 carat was only able to be bought because DH was engaged before and we traded THAT ring in to get mine :rotfl: :cool1: SO, I kinda doubt he would care if I traded this one in!!!

I cannot imagine upgrading my 1/3 carat diamond ring that my then 19 year old fiance picked out in some fancy downtown Boston jewelery store some 28 years ago. It represents our youth, our hopes, and promise to each other. But love is more than jewelry and symbols...I will remain by my DH's side no matter what is on my finger...the bond comes from within. :)

we are approaching 10th anniversary and I do want a band looking for one with 10 stones I know I know I'm different don't want the 3 stone
but haven't even starting looking yet

My DH designed an anniversary band for our 10th Anniversary that has 10 diamonds. He went to a gem store, picked out 10 matching diamonds and custom designed the ring. He presented it to me in front of the mickey flower head at the entrance to Disneyland on my 10th Anniversary. (He doesn't really like Disney) That ring is more important to me than the wedding set.

Another poor college engagement story here. :teeth:

DH and I live the love we have together every day, so although I love my rings, they're far from the whole story for me. :love2:

I have upgraded my engagement ring twice - once for a different ring altogether (it was white gold when I preferred gold) and once for just the stone. As we could afford it, we upgraded. My rings are simple but pretty, and the stone is still modest by today's standards. DH (who wears my deceased father's wedding ring) had no problem with it because he knows my rings are the only jewelry I wear on a regular basis (besides earrings and a watch) and that it's important to me to like what I see on my hand 24hrs/day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

The jeweler DH originally bought the ring from told us a large part of their business is upgrades, and they make it very easy to do.

To the OP, do what feels right, and good luck. :wizard:

My original diamond was a .40 carat round solitaire. For our 10th anniversary my DH wanted to trade it in and upgrade to a larger stone. I didn't want to part with the original diamond so we had it reset as a pendent. I love my marquis diamond that was reset into my original setting. Oh, and today is our 15th anniversary!! I was teasing him that it's only 5 more years until we upgrade again....I don't think he knows I'm kidding. ;)

As some may remember, my DS3 lost my engagement ring back in the summer. Well, I never did find the rings and I ended up filing an insurance claim. I ended up buying a bigger ring with the money. Although I am very happy with my new big ol' sparkler, I would give it back in a heartbeat to have my original ring back. I should say that my old ring was very nice (and a pretty good size as well) but nowhere near as big as my new one.

If I were you, I would rather have an anniversary ring than change my original.

The only way I will "take" a new wedding ring is if it goes with a vow renewel. I am hoping to go to Tahiti for our 20th Anniversary (in 3 yrs) I would love to do a ceremonial vow renewel on the beach, then and only then would I take a new ring.

Well being as DH lost his wedding ring this summer in a lake in Iowa I am trying to not be too sentimental.
I ended up w/ 3 1/2 carats on original ring so I should be happy (got married when DH was in his 40's). Although platinum instead of yellow gold would be nice. Hmmmm...
I am a jewelry freak so I would definitely get a larger diamond if offered, but I would not trade in 1st stone. I would keep it and try to used the stones elsewhere.
I have pulled several diamonds out of jewelry I have inherited and the original settings were not disturbed at all. I was very surprised.
On a side note, if you want to re-create setting I suggest "Harolds" on Main Street by Hobby Lobby. He has reset a few things of mine and I have been happy.
Good Luck - can't go wrong either way.

Oh my gosh! I forgot about this thread. Good News!!! My DH did not lose his wedding ring in the lake in Iowa. He actually put it in his medicine bag and found it a year later. We got it sized much down and now he does not ever take it off.
Yeah!!!

This thread's from a year ago... :)

DH wound up buying me a beautiful platinum and diamond anniversary band that I LOVE.

Unfortunately, the platinum causes a nasty skin reaction and I can't wear the ring. Oh- I'll wear it for a day here and there, but then I have a really ugly and uncomfortable reaction on my fingers for several days. :guilty:

I'm thinking that's a sign that I need to see about trading the band back and upgrading my engagement stone after all. :)

GREAT thread :) and Kathy, I hope you get the ring of your dreams! :)

I am so sorry you are having a reaction! =(

How funny this thread got revived!

I don't think i would as my ring was my dh's grandmother. It is a very funny story: She was old and could never remember where she put things and after she passed...like years after she passed his mom and dad got a phone call and said they found her wedding ring in the back of the toliet. So my dh always teases me that my ring used to be in the toliet. When his parents gave it to us we went and had it reset...my ring got the diamonds and his ring got the gold...now we each have a special wedding ring and they both have more meaning!

When we were married we didn't have much money. Actually, we didn't have any money, bring poor college students. :rotfl: I picked out a very modest set, which I was happy with. Once we had a little more money I kind of wished that the stone was bigger, but I don't think that I would have changed it, even though my DH suggested it. Then, a few years ago, the stone fell out. Honesly, I really tried to find it! But, I still don't have the ring since buying the stone hasn't made it to the top of our list and we're not paying college tuition. Of course if I'd quit making these WDW trips we'd have the money! I will before long, though. I do want to use the same setting and just get a different stone.

My story is similar to many of these...DH and I were engaged and married while still in college. He bought a simple solitaire diamond engagment ring, and we attached gold bands to either side of it when we were married. DH surprised me last year on our anniversary with the beautiful ring he wanted to buy me 10 years earlier. I love my new ring, but I have great sentimental attachment to my original wedding ring. We've finally decided to consult with our jeweler and turn the ring into a diamond necklace to be given to DD on her wedding day.

However, it costs the same as a Disney trip & we'd rather go to WDW. :p

LOL, That is me. I woulud love a bigger set but I rather have something we can all enjoy. Our trip is for our 10th and some day I will get an annivesary ring but I can wait. Prob until the girls are grown and married. :rotfl:
