Inspired by the "begging for money" thread....

A local family asked a local supermarket (privately owned) if they could set up a hot dog/bake sale outside his store to raise money to go to Disney. He agreed IF they bought their supplies from him. He made them leave when he walked out front to find them using Walmart supplies.

Another local family used Make-A-Wish to send them to Disney. The daughter had completely recovered from a type of cancer and my co-worker had to take her to many of her treatments the year before because it was "inconvenient" for any of the family members (several non-working including the stepmother) to drive her there. Once the trip was announced, the entire extended family jumped on the bandwagon and even kept calling and demanded more vouchers/ more for meals, etc. The poor girl hated the entire trip of argueing relatives and at the Florida state line was begging to be allowed to return home.

But I have to ask, why is a high-school senior going on a vacation that far away and spending so much money? $3000+ could go to so many other things...like college, rent deposit, etc. If the family could afford to send him, then that it their choice. But, if they can't afford to send him and solicit funds to send him....they are teaching to live beyond his means and have society pull the load for him...IMHO.

DH and I talk about this all the time. I HATE it when I see kids on the side of the street begging for donations for something, or the jars in the stores, or anything remotely like it.

DH and I both feel that the groups need to hold fundraisers instead of begging for money. And if that just isn't acceptable, then the kids and the parents need to come up with the cash to pay for whatever it is they need. If it can't be done, then you go without. It's our official stance and we will not allow our children to participate in the begging.

You need to teach kids to earn what it is they desire, not to expect someone else to hand it to you.

I agree with you. I know for a fact that some kids that do this kind of "fundraising" for clubs and organizations will often "help themselves" to the money donated.

One of my DH's co-worker's (Bob) son (Steve) has been invited to some major tennis tournament for high school kids and he has to come up with ~$1,500 to go to this event. Instead of soliciting donations, Bob is making Steve work for the money.

In addition to a part-time job, Steve makes gourmet salads in the morning before going to school and Bob takes them to work and sells them there for around $4 per salad. DH says the salads are quite good and a big hit and that people will usually donate more money. On weekends, Steve does odd jobs around his neighborhood to earn more. He does all of this and still maintains an 'A' average at school.

I can't help but admire Steve's actions. At least he is not sitting on his derriere while someone else is collecting the donations. Isn't this the way it should be?

Now that kid is learning how to be responsible & work for what you want. BRAVO!

This gets on my nerves too. Our HS Choir is raising $$$ to go on a cruise to Mexico (Cozumel or Cancun). I refuse to support them. 1st of all, I think it is not safe for kids to travel like this in light of events over the past few years.
2ndly, we are talking about alot of $$$ X a bunch of kids (we are a SMALL town). I think this teaches our kids to expect others to pick up the tab for their FUN!!! I agree with others that these kids should WORK for the $$$.

I hate to drive by "car wash" fundraisers & see young girls in their bikini tops & shorts standing on the side of the road advertising. What values are we teaching our girls???????????

I took a government trip when in HS & I paid for 1/2 and my parents paid the other 1/2. If was not like the "over-the-top" trips kids are taking now!

To the original poster: I sure hope she gets a few 1099-misc forms in her mailbox next year! She's not a charitable organization and those donations are completely TAXABLE! One quick call to the I.R.S. should do the trick!

Sorry, but I disagree. They are gifts. They are no more taxable to that woman than if someone gave her cash as a birthday present.

It sure would serve her right if they were, though!
