Much has been said over on Stinkerbelle's thread about how shocking young teens are dressing nowdays. I am in no way saying this way of dressing is OK.

But can you think of other things that used to be shocking that have become so mainstream that hardly anyone thinks any thing of it now?

I could go way back to the Little House on the Pararie and Ma told a story about when she was in school, and the teacher sent her home because she "was so bold as to let her ears show" with her hair pulled up.

Split riding skirts, skirts above the ankle, and lets not forget the shocking bathing suits of the 30's and 40's. I'm sure our ansestors thought the arrival of the two piece suit was the end of civilization as we see it.

So what terrible things do you wear as a youth that would not be any big deal now??

I was thinking about underwear last night after 'debating' the thong. ;)

I'm sure the bikini underwear were a big shocker at one time. Now those seem to be accepted with no problem. :)

Tattoos and piercings seems to be pretty commonplace things to get during spring breaks. And not just for teens. It's very commonplace now to see little tiny baby girls with pierced ears just because parents want to play dress up or show that the baby is a girl and not a boy. :p When I was a teen it was a big deal getting permission to get your ears pierced at around the age of 13...now many girls have it done before they can even walk and talk.

visible bra straps...the "b" word on tv..celebrities getting arrested and then starring in a movie the next week

All the shootings in the news I mean the shhotings taking place on the city streets it used to be something people got upset about but now seems to be something people just see and go ohwell another one. People filing law suits against companies because they were not smart enough to check and make sure the lid was on the coffee cup properly and it spilled and burned them.

Being seen anywhere other than beside water in a bathing suit, up to and including a car, for which you could, believe it or not, get ticketed.

Having bare legs when wearing a dress.

Dressing up without gloves.

Entering a church without a hat. Anyone else remember those little doilies they sold at the doors of Catholic churches in case you showed up without a hat? 35 cents LOL

Inter racial kissing on TV...first one was Captain Kirk and Uhura, and it was not a willing kiss, but one they were forced into by an evil alien.

Normal looking people in commercials...everyone was good looking in those days LOL

Wearing jeans in church

Viagra commercials

The 'a' word on TV

Disney being criticized for lack of quality or imagination

Girl scout leader- so am I - just saw a PSA made by GS about the fact that 92% of young girls in High school polled has been victim of some sort of abuse in school or home!! That shocks me now! Keep on touching the life of a girl! My daisies are bridging this week to Brownies!!!

:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: princess: princess: princess: princess:

Mowhawks and neon dyed hair inthe early 80's was still shocking.

I did not notice your name until I read Microcell's post. I was a brownie leader for 10 years.

Probably best for me not to give my thoughts on this question, a wonderful one it is.

Wow - there are so many, aren't there?

How about homosexuality? Very mainstream nowadays. I mean, can you imagine "Queer Eye", even 10 years ago?

Vulgarity in popular music has definitely had it's 15 minutes, and it's getting old quick.

I recall when umarried people co-habitating was controversial. Same for children born out of wedlock. Both are probably the norm now.

Wearing anything but dress shoes when serving as an acolyte or alterboy/girl at my mother's church (she's Lutheran, btw). When I was in Confirmation, if it was your turn to be alterboy/girl or acolyte and you wore tennis shoes, regular sandals or anything but dressy shoes, the pastor would throw a fit. Now things are run by a younger, hipper pastor who doesn't seem to care.

My wife and I had our first daughter 2 years before getting married. I can just imagine what would have been said about it back in the 70's or or even earlier. How about the stuff they show on TV it has gotten to the point now that they are almost allowing anything on there short of hard core in prime time.

This reminds me of something someone told me the other day.
"What one generation tolerates, the next generation embraces."

oh jeez

never good when your screen name is in the SUBJECT line!

gave my heart a start there Girl Scout Leader.

I do admit that other thread go out of hand...I never thought it would get to that point.

But on topic with YOUR topic - I would have to ditto the piercing/tattoo. It took me FOREVER to convince my parents to let me pierce something besides my ears.

They finally gave me permission at age 21...that's right - legally an adult and I waited for permission. They HATED that eyebrow ring.

I hid my belly ring (age 22) from them for a while - it shocked/freaked them out at first - now they could care less.

And they think my tattoo is pretty damn unique/cool...so I guess what would have shocked them about 10 years ago is fine now.

I can remember when the Beatles hair style was frowned upon....my Mom use to say: "you can't see thier eyes, they MUST be on drugs!!":p Also, in 1977, my Brother left his wife of 5 years and was "shacking up" with his NEW girlfriend! It was a really BIG to do with my Mom too.;)

AMEN!!! I can't believe what they will play on normal radio now. Even if the bleep it out its still so obvious what its supposed to be.

Oh and on the tattoo subject, my mom tried to ground me when I got my first one. I was 28 and had been married for 9 years!!

Another one just hit me. My DD and her friends think nothing of talking about hot boys to me. I would NEVER have been able to talk to my mom or any of my friends' moms like they do now.
