If I borrowed points from 2010 for an August 2009 reservation and had to cancel 42 points....When must I use those points by?

Is it within the use year they were banked into? That would mean I would really have until July 2010 to use them?

I think this is the case, but wondering since my MIL "Yes I'm absolutely sure we are staying the whole week" is now saying "I think we can come for five days"

Whatever, I just do not want to loose one point.

It would help to know your use year.

Once borrowed, points cannot be returned to their original use year. They stay in the use year into which they were borrowed. If not used by the end of that use year, they expire.

If you cancel part of a reservation, ask MS to use the borrowed points for the remaining part of the reservation. Thus current use year points will be returned to your account and if you are still within your banking deadlines, those current use year points may be banked.

It depends on your Use Year month - but points borrowed and later returned to your account must be used by the end of the Use Year of the reservation for which they were used. Borrowed points that have been returned to your account cannot be banked.

If you have a June Use Year and borrowed points from your 2010 Use Year for a reservation anytime in your 2009 Use Year, borrowed points returned to your account would need to be used by the end of May, 2010. This is the case whether the reservation was in August, 2009, October,2009 or May,2010.
