as opposed to depending on your SO to do it for you?

I don't like to depend on DH to do typical "guy" things for me. Maybe it's because my mom had all girls and we were expected to learn how to do this stuff. Like lighting the pilot on the furnace, changing tires, minor household & car repairs. DH does do some of this stuff but so do I.

I have a daughter and I make sure she learns to do things to help herself--if I had a son, I'd make sure he knew how to do basic cooking, laundry, and other traditional "girl" things. This really goes both ways--my dad was a great cook but we had to teach him how to do the laundry when my mom took us kids on an extended vacation without him. How does a man in his 40's not know how to run the washer?

I just can't stand to have something simple be a big ole mystery to me and when something comes up that I don't know how to do, I make an effort to learn how it's done.

My dad wouldn't allow us to get our learner's permit until we could identify the basic parts of a car engine, change the oil, change a flat tire, and hook up jumper cables on our own.

He was a builder and our summer jobs consisted of working for him. As a result I can lay brick, pour a cement floor, frame a house, paint a room properly, and do most minor (and some major) home repair and improvement projects. The ones I didn't learn during those summers (like laying a tile floor, installing a new toilet, installing new faucets, putting in new lights, etc.), I bought a book and just learned.

As for household stuff like cleaning and cooking, it was not an option in our house to let mom do it alone. She taught me how to do many things include cook, sew, clean, and do household maintenance (e.g., change the filter on the oil burner, plant a vegetable garden, trim the shrubs, etc.).

If I don't know how to do something, I buy a book or look for a class to attend. There is nothing I can't learn how to do. I hate having to depend on others to do things.

Hey I don;t think    I have ever inspired anything before ;) :teeth:

Those things which I have no interest in learning DH still manages to get me to learn  LIKE
Put the plow on a big dump truck,
driving said dump trucks,
I wanted to drive the John Deere 310D but I really didn't want to WORK it - but he made me - lol
and some other things he just looks at me like I have three heads and laughs when I ask How! (that would be construction based stuff!)

Well, hey, you're inspiring to me today, pattyT! :rotfl:

No, actually, I really like that DH does some things and I do others. I have no desire to run the snow blower. But I am a clever girl, and I think I could do it if I had to, and I wouldn't feel intimidated about it. And if I absolutely could not figure it out on my own, I know where to go for help.

Oh yeah, I have to be able to do things for myself. Sometimes I may not feel like doing it but at least I know how.
