Would you buy resort mugs knowing that they were good for your length of stay and then RECYCLED by Disney? They'd be turned in at check-out. Would that help to eliminate the issue? :confused3

NO, I use my mug every day at home for coffee. I look at the mugs as a souvenir with the net cost to me going down every time I refill it.

I never bring a mug back and bought a POLY mug during the second to last day of my stay. I think I only filled it up twice but glad I remembered to buy my souvenir mug.

Really wouldn't do anything to stop people who use 7-11 mugs, paper cups or other stuff.

If Disney cares they could use a bar code system, get rid of self-service refills or put the beverage station behind the cashier and have the guest go past the cashier to pay.

What would be a good side note to this policy if they had some sort of bar code or sticker that you had to have checked or scanned upon refilling good only for length of stay. They did this with a sticker on Bliz. Beach mugs when I worked there in '96, good only for that date. I think I have seen the scanning technology at a fast food restaurant.

I can't believe I am replyijng to a Mug thread - I should know better...........

But, if the mugs cannot be reused, then I think a barcode system would be better - I find it obscene to think of all the plastic that is being used to make mugs that are unnecessary (for the environment) - I have a mug, if I go back to Disney 10 times I am quite happy to pay $11 for the privelige of free drinks each time, but I don't NEED 10 more mugs.

That was kind of my point, Bev. The mugs are just wasting for most people sitting in cabinets and not being used. They could easily sterilize the mugs and resell them as length of stay mugs. Barcodes would be good, but could you imagine if the system went down and people were waiting to refill? :earseek: That would be chaos!

Forget the mugs, think about this:

How much would you be willing to pay to have a sticker put on your Key to The World card that would entitle you to free drinks at any counter service location that had fountain drinks/etc. Be a service similar to what you get on a cruise line.

Just a thought of how to further improve the service, make more money for the mouse, and improve convenience to the end user.

I have often thought that - I would love to have 'free' drinks throughout the world, and would be prepared to pay quite a lot for that.

I agree with the sticker. That's a great idea. Maybe it could be another perk for guests staying at resorts and for use in the parks also.

How about adding a mug wristband.... good for each stay... bring your mug back, pay a small fee, get a wristband for your mug... a handleband, so to speak....

Or just charge less for the mugs and get rid of free refills

There are several really good ideas in this thread. Unfortunately, I think it boils down to the fact that every single one of them will cost far more to implement than the amount of $ that Disney loses on the soda refills.

Personally, the mugs are okay souveniers, but not THAT attractive, imho. (I have WL lodge ones...)

When I bought them the sign CLEARLY stated that they were for that trip only (length of stay) and I'll happily abide by that policy. However I personally know several people who were told they were reusable, and I would hate to think of the black eye Disney would give itself if they appeared to be reversing a policy that some believed to have existed. In the long run, those mugs hold only about 8 oz of soda (less with ice), which has to cost Disney about 3.5 cents. The bad PR alone would cost far more than that.

There are just times when I really have to put my faith in karma, and know that somewhere down the road, boorish behaviour has its own reward, so to speak.

Are they not reusable?

Depends on what you mean by reusable. Yes, you most certainly can reuse them. I use mine at home a lot. Not enough to justify having more than 10 of them tho. :) They do take up a fair amount of room. But, if you mean can you reuse them on each trip, at different resorts, well then...the jury may be out on that one. Some say they have been told by CMs that you may refill it every single time you visit that resort. Other CMs have said refill it every time at any resort. Others have mugs (and have seen signs) saying the mug is good for that particular trip, at the resort it was purchased at. Clear as mud isn't it??!! Basically do what you feel comfortable doing.
