We bunk off school in UK too. Or someone does a bunk, which means they run off/disappear. No idea where that came from, did our bunk come from MA or did your's come across from England?

I live in South Philly and all I ever hear is:

"Youse"
"Yo Cuz"
"Its a Sin!"
"Down the Shore"
"Supermarket" (Never a grocery store, people laugh at me when I say that)

Miami is a very multicultural city so we have a big mixture of things but southern and a mixture of Spanish and English (Spanglish) Barbeque is a food here to. My husband has beef barbeque every week. Mama is a common address to kids. like what's wrong mama. (or mami)

thought of some common nicknames we have for cities and their inhabitants around here-

berkely is called "berzerkly" (resident's are sometimes called "berzerkers"
sacramento is "sacrapamento"
people from napa can be referred to as "napkins"
anyone traveling to any area of southern california will just say "i'm going down south".

theres also a small town in northern california called "booneville"-although it's largly dieing out with recent generations, they actualy had their own localized language called "boonlink" (or something similar) that was made up of words and expressions that the original settlers brought from other parts of the country and used but became mispronounced.

i find the concept of "spanglish" interesting-one of my job duties was to oversee interviews of candidates who wanted to hire into goverment jobs with the designation of "interpreter" or "bi-linglual", and i always found it interesting how many of the younger applicants could not converse in true spanish because their language skills were made up of hybrid words expressions that did'nt translate beyond the community they were raised in. in fact our actual interpreters had a difficult time trying to communicate with non english speaking clients who spoke only thier regional "spanglish" (in lots of cases they would bring a family member who spoke true spanish to assist them with translation). we saw similar situations with some of the tagalog speakers too (the kids had their own language that did'nt allow for communication).

We don't say soda or pop, we call them all Cokes. So you might say "Let's stop and get a Coke. What does everyone want?" You'll get various answers: Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Coke or even Pepsi.

We also say "Do what now?" Which really means "Say it again because I didn't hear you or I could not understand what you said."

We also say:

yesterday night (instead of last night)

I know there are others that I can't think of right now.

It's ALL Coke down here. Anything with carbonation is a Coke. I don't care if it's a Sprite, a Dr. Pepper, a Rootbeer.... it's still a Coke.

Many people in Maine use the word "wicked" a lot, and not meaning something bad. Ex.- "That was a wicked good movie." There is a comedian from Maine, Bob Marley, who does a whole routine on how people in Maine talk and how people "from away" can't understand a thing we say. It's really funny!

hey, I was going to say Wicked.I always thought that was a Mass thing! My parents live in Maine and what I think of as a Maine word is Ayhuh followed by a drmatic pause and sometimes nothing else.
