Inspired by FloridaFam: Has a pet ever adopted YOU?

I love animals. I got my kitty for free because nobody wanted him (he had a hernia, no biggie). He is the sweetest cat I have ever had. :goodvibes

My aunt has a few cats, some are outdoor. One day, she woke up and found a tiny black and white kitten in her bedroom, with an older male cat of hers. SHe had no idea if this kitten followed him in, or if he sort kitty-napped it but she took it in. A few days later she found another, similar looking kitten in the backyard. Still a mystery, but she took them both in.

There are so many stray cats in my neighborhood, it's so sad :sad1:

I just remembered another one. When I was 16, my Mom and I drove to Maryland(outside Baltimore) to visit my Great Aunt Maddie. We were on our way home from shopping and saw this little, white dog running around at a busy intersection. She was almost hit a couple of times. So, as we are sitting at the light, watching her dodge traffic, she trots over to our car. As she does, my Mom opened her door and she jumped right in.

We drove her to my Aunt Maddie's. We decided to put up signs and we called all the animal shelters in the area. We didn't get any response in the 3 days we were there. So, we decided to bring Tori home with us. For about 2 months, we called the shelters periodically to see if anyone was looking for her. But nobody ever was.

I know it sounds odd. We had recently been "approved' to adopt a lab through a rescue. We went to see the rescue group at a Humane Society fundraiser, and we went to see the dogs in the adoption area, and almost 3 years later, I swear this dog picked us out.

We ended up with an 8 year old lab/white shepard mix, who is now almost 11. He is a momma's boy 100%. He loves people of all ages, especially a 7 year old neighbor girl who in general dislikes dogs. I think the reason this girl loves our dog is he doesn't jump, and he will sit there and absorb the "love" from her until she is done.

Our dog would have been a great dog for any family. Lovable, great manners, and doesn't jump or bark. OK - he barks about 1 time per month on average. We were the lucky ones to end up with him.

Now back to your "mostly" kitty stories...

My cat Cheeky adopted us (thats how he got his name!) I was outside one evening, a friendly cat that I had not seen before came up to me so I stroked it then went back into the house. After I shut the door I turned around to see the cat sitting purring in my hall way. That was 11 years ago! It turns out he was 10 weeks old at that point and lived with a family over the road from us. However the little girl that lived there used to pick him up and swing him around by his tail!! So the 1st day he was allowed out was the day I saw him on my driveway. they said we could keep him, although I don't think there was actually much choice for the humans really!

In Oct 97 I was 5mos pregnant with 2nd dd. I stopped at the gas station by our house and saw a thin, short haired white and orange cat by the door. As I walked into pay for gas, some guy tried to kick the cat. I said, "How would you like it if somebody kicked you?" (Don't mess with a pregnant woman;)) He muttered something at me and went on. I asked the attendant whose cat is was and of course he said it had been hanging around a few days.

When I went outside, it followed me to my car meowing very loudly. Well that was all it took. I called my dh and told him to bring me the cat carrier. I didn't know til later that the attendant had called my dh and said he better come up because I was going to get into it with this guy that kicked the cat.

Anyway, I took the cat home planning to find a home for him as we already had a dog and a cat. I took him to the vet, had him neutered and declawed and vaccinated. $200 later, he was ours and he is named "Lucky" because I brought him home. The vet thought he was about a year old at the time. He is now long haired and quite a bit heavier. :) He is the most loving cat and just follows me or the youngest dd around. When I call his name, he answers me with a "meow."

Now, 12 years later, I often think what would have happen to him had I not stopped in there that day. I love a happy ending.:goodvibes:cloud9:

Awww.

Tiki has grown on us and it's only been 48 hours. She is just precious. She sleeps a lot but has been up and around playing and was meowing through the screen when the kids went out to play.

The vet said she is about two pounds underweight but she'll be okay.

We feel very lucky. We had no idea she would come into our lives. We think it was meant to be. I was sitting on the couch crying because was the 8th anniversary of my brother's death from colon cancer and it was at the almost exact time as the time he died when DH called me and told me this cat would not leave him alone and he wanted to bring her home.

I previously posted my story of finding Bunny, but almost every companion animal that has come into my life has come to me in unusual circumstances. I tell my DD that's how you know for sure that they were meant to be part of the family. :goodvibes

When I was 16, my horse died. It was a terrible and tragic death - she was sick for about a week before she finally passed away. That week was the greatest learning experience of my life.

When they came to take away the body of my horse (I was boarding her and there was no place to bury her), I didn't want to be there. I went home. But I soon got a call that my other horse (I had two) was going crazy and wasn't letting them near the body of my deceased mare. They told me that they had no choice but to ask me to come help - my other little mare was near hysterical. I had no idea she would react that way - she never seemed to care at all about the mare I had lost.

When I arrived, this little mare ran to me and she was shaking. I sat on a log in the field, holding her halter, sobbing into her neck while the men loaded the body on a truck. We sat there mourning together for a long time. I felt a slight tugging on my pant leg and there sat a little kitten, just looking up at me. I picked her up and she climbed all over me, playing and trying to get my attention. I have to admit, she made me smile in my moment of despair. I don't know how she got there or where she came from - she was tiny, probably just starting to wean. I never saw another cat there.

The kitten stayed right there with me as I sat with my remaining horse until very late in the evening (I wasn't sure what she'd do when I left her, so I stayed until she was exhausted and sleepy). When I went to leave, I put that kitten in my shirt pocket and took her home. My parents could hardly tell me I couldn't have that cat - I had just lost my best friend.

I'm 40 now and that kitty lived with my mom and dad until just a few years ago. She had a great life and she was a constant reminder of the friend I had lost so many years ago. I knew she was sent to me to help me through that tough time.
