Also, remember teachers don't get 'vacations' during the summer and Christmas. They aren't paid for these days. Teachers work under a 185 day contract, and they aren't paid for the days when school is not in session. It's more like they are "seasonal" employees, just like construction workers, etc.

I understand that--I was talking about paid vacation in the traditional sense (i.e. work here and we will pay you x-dollars and give you 2-weeks paid vacation per year).

I was asking in that sense as a poster who was a teacher said she got a paid vacation. (hence the question time frame of "during the school year").

For our county--teachers can get paid for the school year or average it out over 12 months. I was not insinuating summer as a paid vacation.

In the district where I work, teachers are given 10 sick days and 3 personal days per year. Personal days may be used for any reason - the district is not allowed to ask why you are using them. They will become sick days the following year if not used. We may not take personal days in the 5 days preceding or following a holiday or the start or end of the school year without written permission from the superintendent, and only 10% of the staff at your building will be given approval for any specific day.
Several years ago, I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to get together with family members from all over the U.S. and Canada for a "family reunion" at Disney World. It would have meant 8 days out of school, and the parents of my students were well aware of the opportunity and supportive of my plans to go. (It was my second year with the same class, and I was very close with the students and parents.) My trip request was denied, even though I said I'd take the days as unpaid time off. There are some really great things about my job, but the lack of flexibility isn't one of them. Sometimes I wish we had year-round school so that vacation time would fall during a season other than summer!
