I've been suffering from insomnia for ages. My doctor put me on ambien, but that is expensive! I can be totally exhausted and as soon as I lay down, I just start thinking about things: things I should be doing, things I'll do tomorrow, things I should have done today...does anyone else have this and does anything help you sleep w/o having to take any meds?

I have insomnia and have taken Benadryl for years in the evening before bed. It works great and the doctor said it was safe. I get the generic brand for .99 cents a box.

I was taking Ambien quiet a bit, but now am just taking it maybe once a week. The Dh bought a dentist chair at an auction, I thought he was nuts, :confused3 but lo and behold I have been sleeping in it, and it is a godsend very comfortable.IS there a generic of Ambien now?

now what works for me is unisom sleep aid on rough nights, yoga before bed, stress relief breathing exercises, a journal to write all my thoughts in to clear my head, a hot bath with lavendar before bed, not eating or drinking anything for 2 hours before bed & a good mattress. all these help me overcome my constant thoughts & insomnia at night.

I don't know. I go see the dr. next month, so will discuss with her then.

what about trying something else?

I take a very very low dose of Ativan which is cheaper.

I've never heard of this...I definately need to see if I can get some help (and some sleep). I'm going to call her tomorrow. I'm on my 3rd night of no sleep. Usually, I'm up 3-4 nights, then I'm so tired that I sleep well, but then it starts over again.

I'm here with ya!

Doc gave me a script for a mild sleep aid. I only take it a few times a month though. I'm scared of becoming addicted to sleep aids. Even with that it can sometimes take me an hour + to fall asleep.

Myst

Well, its 11:14pm and I'm going to try to get some sleep. Have a great night everybody!

I have had difficulty falling asleep for several years.....I am very much on the go during the day and even some evenings....and by 10pm feel exhausted and falling asleep watching TV, but I am wide awake, as soon as I hit the pillow.
My dr prescribed Ambien 10mg....It works wonderfully, but I can only take 1/4 of a pill. If I take a whole pill I dont remember much from the time I take the pill until I wake in the morning....a really weird feeling.
I asked my dr. and the pharmacist about Ambien being addictive and they didnt seem too concerned about that.
I know Ambien is expensive....thank goodness my med insurance pays for it....although it is on the highest copay tier.....$25.00 for 30.

I think I suffer from insomnia now. It's after midnight and I'm not the least bit tired. I can't even imagine going to bed anytime soon. It wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't been up since 4:50 this morning.

I can't sleep without the benedryl. Sometimes I take 2 and still can't sleep.

I have bouts of insomnia. Going through one now. I can be half asleep on my couch watching TV but as soon as I crawl into bed I'm wide awake and my brain won't turn off.

I used to take benedryl or nyquil but I'd have the craziest dreams and then wake up in a cold sweat like nothing happened 4 hours later.

I try and make my brain focus by doing really hard long division problems or counting backwards from 3s from a huge number.

I think I'm going to ask for a perscription of Ambian when I go to the doctor. I need more sleep.

yep, I have dealt with this for all my adult life! I am in my 40s now and I remeber not being able to sleep even in my teens. I sleep if this an av, of about 2 hours a night. If I really need sleep, I will take a xanax, no hang over feelinig etc. but it will only llet me sleep 3 hours. I just deal..sleeping pills do not work for me.

Yup me!! And when it hits, ambien really doesn't work for me because like you my mind is going 10000 miles a minute. Once I fall asleep I am sure the ambien works but it's getting to the point of falling asleep.... I just can't do it. OTC meds wire me... holy cow it's like I am on speed (I think it messes some how with my anxiety issues). Believe me, I have tried several...

I take a xanax when needed... not often but when needed it works much better for me... my mind is able to calm down. I take 1/2 of a .25mg unless it's really really bad and then I will take an entire .25. The doctor said I can take .5 but I luckily never had to.

Last night I knew I needed to take a xanax... but waited and waited and waited... Surely I'd fall asleep... right?? ha! Like you my mind was going plus I have restless leg syndrome... which was going crazy last night. My poor husband LOL. He told me to take the xanax early tonight if I felt I needed to.
The xanax helps my whole body relax. I finally took one @3:30am when I knew I wasn't going to fall asleep and wouldn't function on zero amount of sleep... I was out in about 15 minutes. 6am sure comes early when you fell asleep just before 4am!

There is a new drug out there for sleep issues that help you fall asleep... I want to ask my doctor about it. Some days I need something several days in a row and I'd like something less addicting the xanax (I have a hard time taking them as prescribed b/c of the addiction factor and not myself, but close family members have addiction issues with "legal" drugs.
