Injured Hamster UPDATE and photo- page 4 (amputation)

If it makes the OP feel any better (or to defend them!) we spent over $300 to get our dwarf hamster medical attnetion. Her eye got an infection and it swelled to 3x the normal size.

The vet we found was great and realizes that yes, we knew it was an $8.99 pet and yes, it was our ONLY pet and yes, we were going to spend what it took to fix her or have her put down if the case warranted it.

We could never get the infection under control and she expired on her own. She was such a wonderful pet, too. I never knew you could train hamsters.

awww, so you spent $300 and she died shortly thereafter? I'm sorry!

I don't begrudge anyone spending money on a beloved pet.
People who aren't animal lovers don't understand it...phooey on them!
Glad Fergie is on the mend.

What do you do when your hammy rubs his nose raw chewing on the mesh on his cage?? I covered the mesh in lemon juice and it didnt work and now his nose is raw!

Aww... your sweet little hamster. I hope she'll do well with three legs. I bet she'll adapt quickly. :)

We have a dwarf hamster and he's such a sweetie. Hamilton (Hammy for short). He's our pet, just like our cat and 2 dogs. We had a white dumbo rat and she had a stroke. She could not eat because the stroke affected one side of her body and she could sit up and eat or walk or anything. So sad. Had to take her in and have her put down. It was so sad.

Hi again!

Sugardimple-she is great, thanks for asking. She goes in for a follow up visit on Monday afternoon. I was worried she would chew on her little stub/wound.

funky-hmmmm...I don't know! Maybe someone on that hamster site you posted might have an answer? Fergie chews on her cage sometimes, and she does it for long periods of time, but she never has a raw nose from it. Let us know what you find out!

Buck-aww, that is so sad about the rat. At least you could do the right thing and end it's suffering.

Thanks Disney Doll!

RIP FERGIE

This is for all the kind folks who posted on this thread when it was current. Fergie passed away peacefully on Nov 9.

Aw, how sad. I missed this earlier. I think that you more than did the right thing.

Aww. I'm sorry to hear this. I followed the thread last year but never posted. I'm glad Fergie had you for a loving family.

Sorry to hear about Fergie. She was very lucky to be so well taken care of by your family.
