We're looking into putting in an inground sprinkling system this Spring. We live on sandy soil and keeping our lawn looking somewhat decent during drier times takes a lot of effort. We have a big back yard and even with moving sprinkers during the day, we can't get every corner. Our neighbors have one and even with minimal usage their lawn is always lush and green.

First, I know it depends on the size of the yard and area you live in, but can someone give me a ballpark price range for a decent system with a timer?

Also any other advice or pros/cons to think about?

Thanks! :)

It all depends on you location. In western NC a good system for say 10,000 - 15,000 sq ft lawn will run you about $3,500.00. It all depends on how much competition is in you area.

We have a 15,000 sq ft lot. Our sprinkler system is a Toro system with 5 zones and has the capacity for more. I think there are 28 or 29 sprinker heads and I paid $2,750. I got 3 quotes and this one was the cheapest. I didn't necessarily go with the cheapest, the others were comparable, but were higher because they said that I needed a pump to up my water pressure which I knew was BS. My water pressure is perfectly fine and so I went with the guy who I thought wasn't trying to give me something I didn't need. The system works GREAT. It also costs me $65 at the end of the fall to have the system blown out so that there is no water in the lines when the ground freezes.

Our last one ran about $2500 or so. If your house is still being constructed, make sure you inform the plumber your intentions of adding a sprinkler. In our area you must install a back-flow-preventer. This prevents water in the sprinkler from backing-up into your water supply. It can be a pretty costly device to have installed, I have heard anywhere from $200 - $500 depeding on the plumber. You may also have to have it tested yearly, which is about $50.

It is soooo much easier than draging a hose around your yard & it is better to water early mornings vs late evening. I would never get up at 5:30 to drag a hose around :)

I blow my own system out each year using an air compressor. Takes about 30 minutes. I see people advertising to do it for about $50.

It all depends on the number of zones you require and the number of heads you want. We have an 8 zone system with 42 heads and paid just under $3,000 for ours. It's GREAT!!!
