We live in Northern NJ and our house is for sale. We're looking to move to South Jersey so we can reduce our overhead and find better schools. Does anyone live around or near Cherry Hill and can you tell me how you like it? We're also seriously looking at Marlton, Medford Lakes and Medford. Thank you!!

I'm considering the same thing...I want to move to my company's Philly office and live in South Jersey, as cost of living is much cheaper.

My sister lives in northern southern jersey (if that makes sense)...in the florence area but she loves it (north burlington county). Can't comment on the Cherry Hill area, except I know Moorestown is an excellent place to live.

I live about 20 minutes from Cherry Hill, but dont know much about that area, but hopefully you will get more answers!

I feel those areas of New Jersey can also be expensive and crowded to live in. Not as bad as North Jersey, of course, but I wouldn't say that the cost of living is that much cheaper.

There's lots of areas south of Cherry Hill and Marlton. The traffic there would drive me batty.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. You could look at Washington Twp. (Gloucester County) and Harrison Twp.

Ahhh...my OLD hometown for awhile....Cherry Hill, NJ. LOVED  everything about Cherry Hill. Still have many friends in CH!! We first lived in "The Woods of Cherry Hill"! We then moved and lived in "Society Hill", a wonderful condo community. We had a huge 3 bedroom condo (3 floors). I met so many families. My son attended "ECLC" (the Early Childhood Learning Ctr). I had DS#2 in Garden State Community Hosp in Marlton. DH worked as a Railroad Design Engineer in CONRAIL's offices in PHILLY.

I will say it was an expensive community back then...probably still is today!

Typical with the railroad, DH was transferred after a number of years.

What do you want to know?

There are quite a few of us Cherry Hill area people around these boards. QUite a few hang out on the budget board, so you may want to repost there.

There are 19 yes 19 schools in the Cherry Hill district. I've subbed at all but three of them.

Cherry Hill is known for having a fantastic special ed facilities especially at the PreK /K-early intervention level, and there are some fantastic programs in the middle schools as well (specifically Carusi-I did a practicum for autistic students at Carusi, and I've never seen such dedicated teachers in my LIFE!)

Rosa is a highly rated IB middle school. Beck is also IB. CH West is the IB high school (well, technically there is the IB program there, its not totally IB). CH East is ranked fairly well also.

Traffic is not bad in Cherry Hill--it all depends on what you are used to. I'm from the King of Prussia/Bryn Mawr area and Cherry Hill traffic is a BREEZE compared to that. I don't think the traffic is all that terrible, but again thats just me.

There are two distinct section of CH. One being East and WEst. That debate has been going on for years, as to which section of town is better. It all comes down to what you want. West is older, more established areas, with distinct neighborhoods and easier access to Philly and the new shopping areas at the former racetrack.

East is more newer homes, some say a less neighborhood feel but more of a developoment feel to it and it is a bit of a haul to get to things like the municipal building, Philly, the shopping center at the racetrack, etc....

It all depends on what you want. My taxes aren't bad, only about $3900 a year. However, I'm in an old established neighborhood in a smaller home. If you have one of newer homes your taxes will run you much higher.

I used to live in Marlton. The traffic in Marlton is much worse than Cherry Hill. The drive down Rt. 73 is heinous all the time, whereas Cherry Hill is only terrible certain times of the day. Taxes are higher in Marlton and Medford than Cherry Hill. (Marlton and Medford are Burlington County whereas Cherry Hill is Camden County) Medford is beautiful and gorgeous, but you are getting into remote areas. I used to live on the other side of medford in Southampton Township and it was always a drive to everywhere. You had to drive to major towns like Mt. Laurel, or Cherry Hill to get all your shopping done. Medford does have some shopping on Rt. 70 but anything off of Rt. 70 9s all mom and pop stores which do not have the best price.

Schools in Medford are supposedly rated well. Marlton is supposed to be good as well, but it all depends on what you are looking for.

I live in CT, but I will be moving to South Jersey soon. My husband is from Southampton. We are selling his current home and buying a house together. If you have any questions let me know.

He graduated Lenape HS in 78, I believe.

Interesting... I graduated Lenape as well, but in the 80's. However most of my neighbors (and I use the term loosely) had older siblings...

You may know his younger sister then, she graduated mid 80's.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I probably do.. my sister too. Sorry to hijack, but its not every day you know of someone from this tiny little town.

Where would you be working. Cherry Hill, Marlton, Medford, etc..are very expensive. They are known for good schools but they are large school systems. I live in a different area of Southern NJ and our costs are much less then these areas. Look into Marmora, Palermo, Upper Township, Egg Harbor Township, Somers Point, Northfield, Linwood, areas. These have good schools although Egg Harbor Township school is the least favorable of this list. Housing costs are still, as far as NJ goes, reasonable.

I'm in Marlton, and I grew up in Cherry Hill. The traffic is a bit dicey sometimes, but depending on where in North Jersey you're coming from, it may still be better than what you're used to. I have to say that I love the schools in Marlton-- I have three kids in three different schools. Taxes are growing, but I believe Marlton (Burlington County) taxes are slightly lower than Camden County (Cherry Hill). If this makes sense -- I'm not crazy about New Jersey, but love Marlton. Lots of great shopping too, if that's your thing.

Odd, we looked at houses in Marlton--similiar size to ours and the taxes were much higher.

We used to live in the condos in Marlton right behind Olgas Diner. One of my friends from another school is now a middle school English teacher at Marlton Middle school (at least that is what I heard over the summer).

That's so funny! About a year ago we looked at house just barely over the township line from Marlton to Cherry Hill, also close in size, and the taxes were about $1,000 more a year!

My kids went to Marlton Middle. Great school!

Wow...thanks to all for the helpful responses. This sure seems like a great area. As far as the traffic and the taxes, I know most people would complain that both are too high! But where we are (Clifton, NJ) our taxes are almost double compared to Marlton/Cherry Hill and the traffic is about as bad as it can get (except for Long Island, NY which has the worst traffic). And our schools aren't great here. The elementary school is good (our oldest is in first grade), the middle school is just ok, but the high school is a mess. We will never have the $$ to send our three kids to private school so we'd like to get into a good public school system. There are some really great schools in Cherry Hill, Marlton, Medford, etc. We've been using greatschools.net to research as we look at houses on the internet. We think we're heading down south Monday to meet with our realtor.

I'm a full-time mom (for now) and my husband used to work in NYC but now works from home doing technology writing, editing and public relations. So we no longer need to be comutable to NYC. He'll need to go to NYC or Philly for the occasional meeting or trade show. His parents are in Toms River, NJ and we'd like to stay somewhat near them. And we love the idea of being closer to the beaches...wow I'm really starting to talk myself into this!

If you want any specific info about a particular Cherry Hill school-- ask me. I've done work at almost every school.

I can tell you about Moorestown as well.

I think the Marlton/Medford/Cherry Hill/Mt. Laurel area is really great. Very close to Philadelphia, very close to the shore, and you'll also be close to Toms River! Marlton is really growing -- lots of new construction going on everywhere.
Good luck!
