Hi all! :wave2:
This is my first time posting on the photography board but I just love digital photography (especially seeing Dan's pics! They are gorgeous! :sunny: )

Anyway......DH and I just bought ourselves a new digital camera.....Canon A610. I'm just learning how to use it and was wondering if anyone could tell me just how many photos I will be able to take with a 1 GB memory card when taking the pics at the best quality I have? I've ordered the 1 Gig through my Airmiles and also just got a deal on a 512 MB card that I think I'll just return to the store if the 1 Gig fills the need. We're heading down to WDW in Feb     and I'm wanting to have enough memory with me. ::MinnieMo

Hi Dan! It's always nice to hear from you! :goodvibes

Thanks for the info and actually I just got a 512 MG Kingston memory card delivered this afternoon and I've ordered a 1Gig too so I think that'll be good for all our picture taking in Feb. :flower:

There's soooo much to learn with this camera and we're thrilled with the pictures we've taken so far.

Thanks again Dan!

When you're at the store look on the back of the packaging the memory card in. It will tell you how many pictures will fit.

manning the Kingston 512 that I just had delivered yesterday doesn't have the amount of pics on the back at all. I thought the same thing but there wasn't any information regarding the number of photos available. ::MinnieMo

Thanks for the tip, Dan. After watching your Illuminations video (while you were down there) I did order the 1gb and 512 card for my S2 from buy.com and have already sent my rebate forms in. Have you received your check yet? If so, how long did it take to arrive? I can't believe the little 16mb card that came with the S2 only holds 8 pics. Boy I am glad I have the other one! Can't wait to use it at the World in March.

I have not received my rebate yet, I think they take a month or so. And remember, if you want to do that video, to use the high speed cards. And memory cards are so darn cheap today, pays to get big ones amd several of them. Good luck on the camera, hope to see some pictures in March.

I use a 2Gb SD card ordered via Ebay from Hong Kong

Now they are doing a 4 Gb card!!

The 2Gb cost me c £88 or $120 but the cost has lowered since.

As I ahve a Dimage Z5 5 megapixel camera I can actually shoot 1hr 40 mins video

Dan,

What high speed card do you recommend?

I just bought the Kodak P850 and in order to shoot in the high quality video I need a pretty high capacity card so I figure it should be high read/write speed as well.

TIA

Not sure I am in a position to recommend, but I have been using the one linked above http://www.buy.com/prod/Kingston_El...y_Card_1GB_SD_1GB_S/q/loc/56943/10403745.html just fine. It is priced well, still has rebate, free shipping, no tax, good brand.

Here are a few links to video I took on my Canon S2 IS (still camera, like yours) of Illuminations and Candlelight Processional that I uploaded to Google Video. I thought the quality, though not good for a video camera, was acceptable for a still with a video function. The first and last ones go in and out of focus a bit as I did not set my focus to infinity and in the dark parts is was searching, in the brighter parts it focuses fine............

The most reliable high speed cards I have found are the San Disk Ultra III and the Lexar 80x. Both are very good brands. Right now I am more partial to the San Disk due to their read speeds seem slightly faster than Lexar's.

Jeff

We only use SanDisk or Lexar as well, but just returned our Sandisk Ultra II, 1 gig high speed card as it wasn't very fast at all. We have a new Panasonic FZ-30, 8mg camera and my brother's 512 reg. Lexar was reading faster than this one. We figured maybe it was defective, and were intending on exchanging it, but we were able to get 2 Kingston high speed, 1gb cards for less than this one on Boxing Day. In Canada our Sandisk Ultras are $170.00 with tax - ouch! This is the first time we've used Kingston and it's working out well - faster than the Sandisk and lifetime warranty as well.

Just a thought based on something I read above, we have an 8mp camera and we are capped at a 2gb card, so I would encourage the above mentioned poster with the 5mp who asked about a 4gb card to check your owner's manual as that may be too fast for your camera.

Well I ended up keeping the Kingston 512 and the Sandisk 1 g as I'll probably take tons of photos on our upcoming trip. :sunny: My 1g I got free through my Air Miles program up here in Canada and the Kingston 512 I only paid $30 with a rebate so I think that's pretty good.

Dan I'm so enjoying watching your videos! I can feel the goosebumps from watching Illuminations! ;) Every time I watch Illuminations I wish that I could share the experience with all of my family and friends as there is nothing in the world like it.

We bought our new camera on Dec 23rd and on New Years day I was hurrying up to see the annual Polar Bears dunk themselves into Lake Erie and I was walking really fast when I tripped crossing the road and my camera fell out of the bag and went down onto the road :guilty: :guilty: :guilty: :guilty: I was sooo upset as I know the store wouldn't repair it for me.....it has a few dents in it but still works. I then remembered my credit card company has a special insurance for damages or theft for the first 90 days so I've submitted a claim to get it fixed.......I hope they do fix it as I'm always soooo careful with my cameras. I realy love this Canon, and hope to get a few more "lessons" in before we head to WDW Feb 2!

on Boxing Day.

Ok, being a totally ignorant American can someone please explain what Boxing Day is? Whenever I hear that term I think of people in satin shorts, a tuke and large gloves battling kangaroos wearing similar attire. And I have to wonder, how in the world do you drive in those gloves? This sounds like a holiday started by some guy named Sugar Ray or something.

Jeff

LOL Jeff I never knew until recently that the US doesn't celebrate Boxing Day! :rotfl:

The stat holiday originally started in Britain when all the servants would get "boxed up" leftover gifts from their wealthy employers but nowadays it's more like your "black Friday" in which everyone runs to the stores to get the "great deals" from after Christmas sales. :sunny:

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas - it's a traditional English holiday referring to the day after Christmas when servants were presented with their Christmas gifts as they had to work on Christmas day. Nowadays it's recognized as kind of like your Black Friday - tons of stuff on sale, especially Christmas stuff and electronics. The only catch is that they don't accept returns until Dec. 27 or 28th as our Boxing Day sales last for the whole week. It is a recognized holiday in England, Canada & Australia, so most people (except retail and restaurants) are closed.

Thanks for all the help :goodvibes

I think I will get a SanDisk and a Kingston and see which my camera and computer like best.

Dan,

Loved...Loved...Loved your video!!! Someday I will have to get down to WDW over the christmas holiday. Thanks again!!! :flower:

Tiger926-
Are you happy with the Panasonic FZ-30??

manning - That is a loaded question since this camera is so cool that it's taking me awhile to figure out all of the settings! We are very computer literate and love taking photos, but I will admit, that this camera has a ton of features that take some getting used to. We have only been shooting in 'P' since 'A' for automatic since we didn't like the results with that setting. I will admit that this camera has a bit of noise, so I clean photos up on Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 or Corel and go from there.

My fav things about this camera: lens, lens, lens!!!! Absolutely incredible, built in Leica lens - my hubby took a photo through our living room window of our community mailbox and we could actually read the flyer that was posted on the outside of it (it was many feet away!) My hubby is so anxious to try it at Disney using the fireworks setting - so that'll be cool as well. Also like the swivel screen too - very easy to use.

All in all, we love the camera, but don't love the fact that I don't have enough time to figure it all out in one night! We have taken some amazing shots of our very busy 2.5 year old princess though, and that's been the best part! I would highly recommend this camera, especially since it's the closest camera to an SLR that you can get without buying an SLR. It's been very highly rated - we basically bought it at top dollar here in Canada (it had just come out at $950.00 CDN plus tax) because we were so impressed with it upon immediately picking it up. I notice that in the U.S. these cameras are much cheaper than over here, so I believe that you would be more than happy with this camera. Just remember there is a bit of a learning curve as this camera can do so much!

Happy shooting! Tiger

Thanks for the info. I have my eye on this camera. Will get it, if canon/Sony doesn't come out with something better soon, when the boss (treasurer/wife) gives me permission. :rolleyes1

You may want to look at Neat Image to take care of the noise. They have a free download demo. It does a very good job. Here is the sight:
