Does anyone know what the play Les Mis is about? Also what do the words Les Mis mean? Is it a sad play or is it upbeat-maybe both? Thanks for sharing any info.

Les Misérables translates to 'poor wretches'.

It is a beautiful musical, we saw it here in Chicago several years ago. This might explain it a bit. http://www.lesmis.com/inspiration/author/aboutnovel.htm

It is not upbeat. I would say it is certainly sad at times but then uplifting and rewarding.

Here is another synopsis. A link does not work as it is in frames. http://www.lesmis.de/en/index_e.html

Prologue: 1815, Toulon

Jean Valjean, released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang, finds that the yellow ticket-of-leave he must, by law, display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the saintly Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver.
Valjean is cought and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him, also giving him two precious candlesticks.
Valjean decides to start his life anew.

1st Act: 1823, Montreuil-sur-mer

Eight years later Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has risen to become both a factory owner and Mayor of Montreuil-sur-mer. Javert, meanwhile promoted inspector, is working in Montreuil-sur-mer, too not able to identify Monsieur Madeleine as the parole-breaker Jean Valjean.

Utterly degraded by her new trade, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when Monsieur Madeleine arrives and demands she be taken to hospital instead.

The mayor then rescues a man pinned down by a runnaway cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 2-4-6-0-1 Jean Valjean, a man who broke his parole whom he has been tracking for years but who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean is unable to see an innocent man go to prison in his place. So he confesses to the court and Javert that he is prisoner 2-4-6-0-1.
Valjean escapes and goes to the hospital to swear to the dying Fantine that he will find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert enters and tries to capture Jean Valjean who knocks out Javert and escapes again ...

Les Mis is short for Les Miserables, in French. The musical is based on Victor Hugo's novel, and it does have some wonderful music but it definitely is not an upbeat show.

We've seen it three times. The music is beautiful. But the play is not uplifting though it ends on an up-note. Definitely see it at least once if you get a chance. You'll sing the songs all the way home.

I absolutely LOVE the story of Les Miserables. I've seen it on Broadway in NYC and in Boston.

You will definitely want to know the story line BEFORE seeing this play because it is almost ENTIRELY sung, with very few spoken words. It is a wonderful story, with some very sad subplots along the way. It is beautifully written, however.

I want to add, I am not a person who is particularly fond of dramas or sad stories, or "tear jerker" types of movies (I normally prefer a comedy or action/adventure), but I absolutely LOVE this musical. Don't pass it up simply because of the sad parts! :)

I've seen it at least 10 times. so I guess you could say I like it. ;)

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we'll live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

It's the one musical I've seen on Broadway and I loved it. It is definitely not the happiest story in the world, but it has a hopeful message in it.

The story is beautiful! I fell in love with it in 10th grade French class. Luckily the next year my French teacher and I went to see it. WOW! I still love listening to the soundtrack. I can't wait to go see it again. My husband, who doesn't really like the stuff I like, is excited to go see it. You will not be disappointed if you go see it!

Several movies have been released. You might want to check on out to see if you will like the story line. The latest one I remember seeing was with Liam Neeson playing Valjean.
