I am considering trying to get a job in the Dallas area. Who knows if the job will work out or not? But, I would like to do my research before I pursue the job. The job I want to apply for is for a company I am familiar with and have been dealing with for a little over 1 1/2 years. I really like the staff there and this job exactly the type of thing I would love to do. Also it is similar to what I am doing now.

What should I know about this area? Do you like it? Why or why not?

I know it is not unusual for people to relocate because of a job, but I have never been faced with it before. I never thought I would even consider moving out of NC.

Also, what is the job market like there? My husband has worked in manufacturing and restaurant jobs. Would he have a difficult time trying to find a job? Jobs are difficult to find in Boone right now.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any info you can provide.

PS What can you tell me about the cost of living in the area? We would need to rent. How much we would be looking at paying a month for a place I wouldn't be afraid of?

I moved to Dallas in 2000 from NJ. As far as the job market its tough. I'm in HR and just got let go from Verizon. Thats the bad part. The good part is that I now have time to go to WDW! :)

There are tons of restaurants here in Dallas, so I'm sure your husband will have many opportunitues there!

As far as living, I love Dallas. There are many transplanted East Coasters here, so you might not find the people all too different (for good and bad). There isn't much in terms of landscape, but there is plenty to do. Cost of living is very good as well, especially as compared to the East. The heat I've found is comparable, but even NJ had some brutal summers, so I'm used to it. Besides, most of my time is spent indoors!

Overall, I think once the market starts turning around, Dallas will be one of the places to be for good job opportunities.

Just my thoughts, perhaps others will have a different viewpoint. :) Good luck on your job hunt!

It offers most conveniences of being a big city. I can't say I love the city, no real reason but I think I'd say the same about most others too. The winters are mild but it can get pretty hot in the summer.

Right now the job market is a little tight, especially in technical / telecomm fields. Dallas is ranked either 1st or 2nd of cities with the most restaurants. I don't think he'd have a problem in that field. I'm not sure about manufacturing, there is some industry but I'm not familiar with the job market there.

Cost of living isn't bad, I haven't rented in several years but you can get a place for probably $600-900. The cost of housing varies between suburbs, the further out you go the cheaper it gets.

I like it here. You'll probably find out if you have allergies though.

While I do consider it my home now, I did move here from SoCal, so that's a tough act to follow. If I couldn't afford to live in SoCal, Dallas would be my next choice.

All the NEers that have moved down here love it, so I guess that's a thumbs up. :)

I love Dallas. I live in Irving, which is a suburb of Dallas. I've lived here my entire life, and would ONLY THINK about moving, IF I were going to move to WDW! I love Texas, and I'll never leave it!

The DFW area is really neat. We have 2 major airports, and 2 very large cities within 30 minutes of each other. You'll come to find out no matter where your going, it's always "20 minutes away" How far is it to the Ballpark??, "oh about 20 minutes." There is lots to do! BUT there is lots of Traffic too! So if you decide to relocate, do your research on your actual travel time to and from work.

Come visit! Get your feet wet! You'll love it!

If you're a nature love, you will just find a few lakes and not too much else. But there is a lot of shopping and night life and dining in the area. The museums are nice too particularly in Fort Worth which is a lovely city IMO. If you like sports we have pretty much everything represented and there's good colleges in the area.

I live in Plano which is just north of Dallas. Plano and the other suburban areas to the north are nice areas even if a bit pricey in parts but the traffic is horrendous in this area. You might want to consider living in the general vicinity of this company. If you want to rent a house instead of an apartment of townhouse, you will likely have to pay at least 1100/month on up depending on where you move to.

I love Dallas! I live in Rowlett, GREAT little town. Small town feel with the big city in your back yard. I can't add anything to what the others have said. It's a great place to live. :)
