Where can I find info about what qualifies someone to obtain a handicapped parking sticker? My mom has cancer & while she is currently in the early stages, there is going to be a time when she will tire very easily. I wondered if this would qualify her to obtain a handicapped sticker to use in large parking lots or parking garages in the future?

Thank you

You probably want to look on the website for the Department of Motor Vehicles or whatever it's called in your state. I know in Washington you have to print out the form and take it to your doctor and have them sign it, then you go to the Department of Licensing and get your tag.

Honugirl is correct, it depends on the state. Here http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/forms/BTR/83039.pdf for example is the Florida applicaiton and rules. You will have to go to your State's motor vehicles site and search for the form and rules.

Normally once the form is located you need to print it out with a lot of the information filled in and then take it to the doctor. Once it is completed you would then take it to a DMV office where they will issue the tag.

The cancer would not normally warrant a placard but the inability to walk long distances would be enough to warrant the placard. Generally they look at the limitations of the person and not the diagnosis.

I use a hang tag instead of the license plate because I was able to use mine in WDW, Midwest, and San Antonio trips as well as for the rental car after one of my accidents. All states have a reciprocal agreement but you must obey the laws of the state you are visiting. My state gives free parking and unlimited time at parking meters except if parking is prohibited. In other states I might not get that privilege.

If you have AAA they can get you the forms usually. You might even be allowed to print out the form from online but not sure. Go to Google and type "handicapped placard" followed by your state's name. You would have to take the forms to a doctor to sign.

The benefits of the disabled placard varies from state to state like Illinois are exempt from parking meter fees and time limitations, except at meters, signs or other markings with time limitations of 30 minutes or less.
