So, after a few false starts and a lot of soul searching we have decided to take the plunge and move back to the East Coast. And after weighing which province to move to, started in NB as that is where DH is from and then shifting to PEI, we have finally decided on NS. Now we are trying to choose between either the Bridgewater area or the Digby area. Can anyone please give me any info on either of these areas, good and bad.

TIA
Sue

My mom is from the Digby area and my sister lived in BW. Personnally I would go with BW. Beautiful area...and close enough to Halifax for major shopping trips and the airport. I also do not like driving on the 101 highway from southern NS to anywhere. All of my family still lives there and no one drives on that highway. Think highway 63....now move it to NS.:scared1:

I'd go BW over Digby just for access to the amenities of the Halifax area. Digby is a beautiful place, but a bit away from everything.

Thanks for the info. I'm starting to lean towards moving closer to Halifax. We were looking at Digby because the housing was much cheaper, now I know why ;).

DH is going for a flying visit to see his mom in Moncton at the end of the month and will be taking a look at some of the areas we are thinking about.

Any other suggestions where he should be looking would be appreciated. And where we should avoid around Halifax.

Thanks again.

Dartmouth would be cheaper than Halifax. I would avoide the north end..anywhere close to Primrose, Albro Lake, Jackson Road..they are all pretty close together. No offense to anyone that lives there but I personally wouldn't want to.

If you looking for houses close to Halifax I would start in Enfiend/Elmsdale/Lance/Fall River. All within a half hour drive and I would image much cheaper than a house in the city. Actually, when it comes time for me to buy a house I'm going to be looking in the Fall River/Waverley area myself.

Digby while nice in the summer is too far away from everything and the driving isn't great. I would go with Bridgewater. It is a beautiful area.

Hi, I live about 20 minutes from Bridgewater. I would stick with Bridgewater as it is close to everything and at least there are things to do in the winter.

Good info, thanks. If you don't mind I'm going to pick your brain a bit about the area.
Do you know anything about the high school in Bridgewater? DS will be going into grade 10.

And do you find there are enough conveniences without having to drive into Halifax all the time?

Can you tell me anything about the Lahave area, there is a house that doesn't look too bad on MLS and it is in Lahave. Is it realistically close enough to Bridgewater to go to school everyday.

I don't know much about the high school in Bridgewater as my family went to school in Chester but I do hear it is a good school.

There are tons of conveniences in Bridgewater. I go there instead of Halifax as I work in Halifax all week so if I need to pick something up on a Saturday I go to Bridgewater. Not sure what you are looking for but there is a large mall and they have started up a new section with a large Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire and various other stores. There is a fairly new movie theater and lots of fast food and restaurants. There is also a Sobeys and Superstore for groceries along with some smaller grocery chains.

The Lahave area is nice...it is quiet and just outside of Bridgewater but not to quiet. Hopefully I have been of some help. If you have any other questions it might be easier to PM me.

Thanks Leafsgirl, you have been a big help. DH is going to spend a couple of days in Bridgewater scouting around in a couple of weeks.

Thanks again, we really appreciate your help.

Just a note as to how schools in and around Bridgewater work . . .

To attend school in Bridgewater (there's an elementary school and a Jr/Sr High on the same block), you have to live within Town boundaries. If you live in LaHave, your son would have to bus it to ParkView Education Centre (which is on the outskirts of the Town of Bridgewater . . . I estimate approximately 45 minutes or more by bus from LaHave to PVEC).

PVEC is a much larger school and has the IB (International Baccalauriate) program. BJHS is a 'town school' w/ approx. 5 - 600 students. BJHS has the French Immersion program and the AP (Advanced Placement) program.

A new multi-purpose recreation centre will be breaking ground soon in Bridgewater. There are lots of lovely places to live in the Town, as well as outside of Town. Taxes will be less outside of Town boundaries, but you would be responsible for sewer/water whereas that's covered in taxes in Town. There is a mall in Bridgewater, many drugstores, nice downtown shops, lots of services (hair, insurance, etc). The regional hospital is also located in the Town. A new shopping area has developed on the outskirts of Bridgewater including WalMart, Cdn Tire, Swiss Chalet, Staples, Boston Pizza, Marks Work Wearhouse, Reitmans, new hotel (just breaking ground).

Digby is lovely IN THE SUMMER. It's very isolated in the winter, and there is not much for major commerce there.

Check out websites: www.bridgewater.ca; www.modl.ca; www.smartbridgewater.ca for more info. Also, the school board website for the tri-county area might be helpful: http://southshore.ednet.ns.ca/.

Bridgewater is also only about an hour on decent highway from Metro (Halifax area) so you can experience major concerts, children's hospital, upscale restaurants, major sporting events, just city-life in general.

It's a great place to live and work!
