Infants and hotel rooms, do I need to enter into the search?

So, we're doing some traveling this summer and will have a newborn with us. I'll be taking a portable sleeper with us, so the baby won't be using a bed at the hotels. Do I need to enter her on the head count when searching? I notice there is often a big difference in the number of results I see when I jump from 2 adults/2 kids to 2 adults/3 kids. I emailed one hotel about it and they didn't count the infant. Is that standard practice, or should I check w/each one individually?

Theoretically it shouldn't matter. Motel 6 doesn't ask for the number of kids, although theoretically they have room occupancy limits.

We've booked for two and then asked for a crib without issue. We often let our kid sleep with us in the same bed. With Priceline opaque booking, the only option theoretically is two adults. We've asked for a crib when arriving and never had a problem. Sometimes we've even gotten a baby supplies kit.
