Okay - I really want to do a trip report this time. I've done so many trips to WDW, DL and various cruises with every intention of coming home and typing it all out, but it never has happened with any seriousness. If I make this post and start our trip out, I hope that it will be the public committment that I need to actually do it!!! I'm not as cool and witty as so many others on here, but I hope that I am able to give insight and info to future cruisers on the Mexican Riveria. I'll be honest about the good and the bad and do my best to answer any questions that pop up!

WITH THAT...

My cast -
My family consists of me, Michelle (32) and my husband Bryan (33) along with our two kiddos, Krissy (7) and Miles (4.5). Bryan and I have been together forever (since I was 14) and dated through high school and college, then getting married and honeymooning in Disneyworld. That was the beginning of the madness! I've been to WDW seven times since we've had kids and last year we went to Disneyland instead. To me, there's nothing better than the pure happiness that you see on your kids face when they are at Disney. Sorry Grand Canyon, but you just didn't do it for my kids. Soon enough they will lose the magic but until then, I'm hooked on the mouse!

I never thought that we'd go on a Disney cruise because I am really super very cheap. People just don't believe how cheap I can do Disneyworld or a NCL cruise, but I've been able to work our credit card rewards and seasonal discounts into pretty much dirt cheap vacations for my family. So when Disney came out with their Kids Sail Free promotion, we booked within about 2 hours of its release. We are at the silver level on NCL (cruising pretty much once a year since we got married) but the price of the Disney cruise was the same with the KSF discount. Can you say no brainer?!?!

Now for the exciting addition - my dad (Mike) and stepmom (Patty) decided to join us!!! I won't say their ages, but they aren't old at all. ;) They've been married almost 20 years, I think (gosh, I should know the exact number but it's more of being bad at math than not remembering). Not being traveling people, this is really their first "relaxing, tropical" type of vacation.

Day negative one!

I want to start with -1 because we fly out the Saturday before the cruise and this will allow my report of the actual cruise to correlate with the way that Disney numbers the days. Make sense??? Good!

I went all out with this trip - cruise meet up thread, fish extender group, a pile of tinker bell gifts, pirate costumes, things for autographs, friendship cards, tip envelopes, etc etc etc etc etc. Pretty much I planned for the cruise as a full time job (I have a business but this is the extremely slow time). So day -2 comes and I have almost every detail ready to go, but nothing is packed! Bryan and I pulled an all-nighter and got our three huge bags, two small duffles and four carry-ons all ready to go. I decided we were just going to overpack and be done with it. I didn't want to have to sacrifice anything!

Anyways, Krissy wakes up at about 5AM to her parents still packing and "helps" us by packing her little carry-on suitcase with what we later found out was 16 books and some naked princess dolls. I must admit that Bryan is not happy with me at this point, because I've been researching this cruise for about 8 months and seriously planning for 2 months... and yet it's 6AM and I'm shoving 12 pairs of shoes into a suitcase while discovering that our son really doesn't have enough summer clothes that fit. Oops... but hey, we have some rocking pirate costumes and enough door magnets to cover then entire 7th floor.

Finally we are all done packing, Bryan has loaded up the car, the kids are all dressed and I have thrown enough waffles into the toaster to qualify as making breakfast. We are flying out of Indianapolis, connecting in Chicago where we will meet my parents and landing at LAX. We head to the airport hotel that we always use for parking. It is cheaper for us to book one night there because they let you park for up to 14 nights! We never have actually used the room - we just check in and out right there and go on our way. We get on the shuttle and make our way to the airport. Feel free to laugh at us... we checked 7 things! That is all our luggage plus two booster seats (our kids don't ride in even shuttles or vans without one). I told you we were overpacking. Thank goodness we are loyal to Southwest where bags fly free! I also want to mention that we flew for about $200 total roundtrip as we used awards and our companion pass from Southwest's credit card use alone!

A slight snag to start our travels. I guess there was a security breach at the Baltimore airport which caused them to hold off flights for awhile. Since our plane was coming from there, we obviously had a delay. I was stressing that we would miss the flight that we coordinated with my parents, but Southwest held all flights at Midway until out plane got there. We did have to run to the gate, but we still made it in time for family boarding and got seats together.

Another delay was announced when we were getting settled on the plane - there was a strong headwind and our flight was going to take longer than usual. Urgh! Oh well, we were on our way to Mickey's boat!!!

Now here's a short personal story - my daughter got me this book for Christmas and I saved it for the trip. It's the final book in a trilogy and I've been waiting to read it for a long time. I fell asleep on take-off and my hubby completely stole the book from me and wouldn't give it back! RUDE! ;) The worst part was that he finally finished it a couple days later, but I didn't get much good reading time on the ship so I haven't even finished it yet!

Back to day -1... After a long flight, we finally landed and Krissy was very impressed with the hand dryers that they have in LA. I do believe that "We don't have fancy things like this in Indiana!" was stated to the population of the ladies restroom.

This is how the movie stars dry their hands

I prebooked a share ride with Karmel shuttle, which ended up being a private ride! The driver was there within minutes of calling the number that they give, despite the fact that we were about 2 hours late. He was really nice and got our massive amount of luggage into the van - impressive! I believe the rate was $132 for the roundtrip (kids were free).

We headed to Crowne Plaza San Pedro. I got the rooms on priceline for $65 each and I called in to request nonsmoking and two double beds. Turns out the entire place is nonsmoking so that was a moot point. At the desk, we asked that our rooms be on the same floor if possible. We ended up with nice rooms on the 6th floor - everything was great - clean, nice view, comfortable, etc.

We wanted to do a liquor and water run, so I found a Vons (grocery store) nearby and also found a pizza place on the internet that had a great family dinner deal that was across the street from Vons. Large pizza, large pasta, garlic bread and salad for $35. The hotel shuttle took us there and gave me their card for calling for a pickup. Everything going good... but here comes a fail. Don't go there to Buono's Pizzeria. The food was decent, but the dine-in concept was a joke. We were sitting inside a nook of a carry-out pizza place on patio type chairs. We were given paper plates, which disintergrated under the spaghetti. The salad came out after the pizza and the garlic bread came out when we were done eating. I would recommend this place to a local for carry-out, but for a cruiser I would suggest finding another place.

Also, at this point came the first indication of a major problem. Our son (Miles) was not handling the time change well as he was bawling through dinner for no reason. He told me "I just need to cry. I don't know why!" Our daughter (Krissy) was able to ride the excitement of vacation more than he was so she did okay, but little did I know that this was a heads up of trouble to come.

After dinner, we headed about a block away to Vons where we stocked up! We got 6 bottles of wine, some premade margarita yumminess, a bottle of vodka, two bottles of cranberry juice and two bottles of sour mix... to go along with the bottle of midori that we brought from Indy. I give you such a detailed report because Bryan discovered early that morning that we didn't have a rolling carryon like he thought, so he carried 75 pounds of alcohol in his arms all morning and afternoon the next day. He's a superstar!

The hotel shuttle picked us up shortly after I called. We headed to our rooms, Bryan readjusted our suitcases and then we hit the sack!

Next up... DAY ONE!

Hi Michelle:wave2: I am so glad you are doing a report as well. Can't wait to hear everything you did on and off the ship! I love the start, so keep it up!

I love reading all the MR trip reports! I have a request - please try to finish your report by April 10!!!! :lmao: I hope that gives you some incentive! lol :thumbsup2

Enjoying it so far, but I want to see who finishes up thier report first....;)

Well, don't put any money down on us...like I said before, DH is pretty slow when it comes to TR. But I love that he does them in the 1st place, so I can't complain too much:)

Hilarious! :lmao:

Like the TR so far. We're planning on Bahama's not MR but stopped to read another Hoosier's report.

Holy cow...that one cracked me up. yeah...not witty at all. OH, this is the DH portion of Disneyzell. Guess here is where it becomes a pain in the rear to not have our own ID's, eh???

Anyhoo...thanks for giving me an excuse to not write an installment of mine :lmao: ok, I'm too lazy to do it in the hotel room...Thursday I promise.

Meanwhile I'm going to read yours. popcorn::

DAY ONE

We all fell asleep with no problems, but the difference in time hit us again in the morning when the kids and I woke up between 4:30-5AM. Bryan woke up hours later as he could sleep around the clock if you let him. I followed the ship on the internet and when it was coming by we all watched it dock! Insert squeals from all of us (well the ones who were awake!)

photo-88.jpg

Some time during those wee hours of the morning, Krissy wrote me the sweetest note all on her own! Talk about making a mommy cry!!!
photo-101.jpg

At about 9AM my parents and I went for a nice walk to the nearby CVS. We weren't looking for an upgrade, so there was no need to rush to the port. I just wanted to be sure to make lunch. CVS is definitely walkable from the Crowne Plaza (about 6 blocks) and we passed some really cute vintage thrift stores. Bryan is lucky that almost everything in San Pedro is closed on Sunday or I would have had another suitcase full of super cute vintage dresses! We got what we needed from CVS and then I searched for a new pair of cheap shoes for Bryan. He was wearing old gym shoes and already had blisters from the walking during day negative one. There was a Payless Shoes by CVS (nothing decent) and then a random sports store down the street. I ended up finding a pair of nice sneakers for $20 on clearance there - score! I got a text from DisneyZell that she got an upgrade to a suite - SCORE for a FE friend! We grabbed some doughnuts from a bakery and made our way back to the hotel. Again, this was walkable and it seemed nice and sorta a trendy stretch of stores - but I am glad that I was able to leave the kids back and not have to drag them. They would have been whining for sure.

We got back and Bryan had gotten everything ready to go. I'm not sure how it happened, but the guy who helped us take our luggage down took us directly to the shuttle, packed it up and drove us away. I had to run to the front desk to drop off the key. I'm pretty sure this made us big cutters in the line for the shuttle, but I was just following the man with our bags. I publically apologize if anyone who was waiting for the shuttle is reading this!

photo-87.jpg

We arrived to the port at about noon and a porter took our luggage right from the shuttle and away it went. We headed inside and now it is funny story time. You know how everyone says that Disney cast members don't say "no" to a guest. It comes up whenever the board talks about things like special requests, shorts in dining room, hogging chairs, kids in Quiet Cove, etc. Now I have no plans on breaking the rules, but I am excited to have a week full of "yes" told to me for my every whim. So we walk in the door and I see my very first DCL cast member! Woohoo! She is handing out Navigators and gives Bryan one. I'm so eager to get my hands on it, but she doesn't give one to me! I ask her for one and her reply... "No, its one per cabin." WHAT?!?!?!?!? Now a personal note - we do not share navigators, ever, never ever, hasn't ever happened. I roll mine up, highlight it in several colors, mark notes on it, use it as a kleenex when the kids have a runny nose... well you see. Bryan makes sure his never gets a single fold, he handles it with "respect" and keeps every single one from every cruise we have ever gone on (and he calls me the hoarder!) I have to admit that I was quite taken aback that she wouldn't give me one. I was sorta stunned as I was whisked away on the escalator. I quickly recovered as I was sure we'd be able to pick one up at guest services as soon as we boarded, but until then I was barely allowed to touch "Bryan's" copy. Mostly I was just shocked that my first DCL experience was a big ole no. (I know there's a chance that this wasn't a DCL person, but there's no way to know and so your brain just rolls them all together.)

Waiting in the check in line pictures - oh yeah, I made everyone wear matching shirts. Actually I would have coordinated family outfits each day of the vacation, but I was thrilled that everyone actually agreed to one day!

Bryan and Me: no picture... BOO!

We waited in line for checkin for about 15 minutes and the lady at checkin was really nice and we had no troubles at all. We just handed her our pack of paperwork with passports and in about 10 minutes she took our picture and handed us our key cards. An interesting tidbit is that we just took one family photo and they break up the individual pictures from that one photo. The check-in lady was sweet and talked to the kids the entire time. (Again, maybe not a DCL person, but I'm gonna give them the credit for having a nice person check us in nonetheless. ;))

There's Dad and Patty checking in waaaaaay at the end (look for the 6' 7" guy):
photo-85.jpg

Security was a breeze and we got boarding number 37 - YIKES! Not a worry though because numbers 24-36 took less than 45 minutes (sidenote - there were no characters at the port when we were there - strange???) Soon enough we were walking through all the tubes that connect the port to the ship!!!!!!! Oh yes, I was already holding back the tears!

Notice the red bag that Bryan is carrying - that is the 75 pounds of alcohol!
photo-83.jpg

I knew about the family announcement so I told Dad and Patty that each family needed to go on separately per Disney rules. I was able to record both of our families being welcomed (it's a video, but only good for the audio because I was just holding it - I wanted to experience it too and not through a video camera.) Now I have been on a lot of cruises and I just have to say that this is a WONDERful way of getting on a ship. I think all cruise lines should use this - low cost and what a way to set the tone for stepping on. Just perfect! OOOH - both our family names are crazy Polish names - and both were pronounced perfectly... WOW!

We went straight to Parrot Cay for lunch. I'm glad I read the boards because the lady at the front just shooed us to Beach Blanket, but I knew that they were open. When I told her we were willing to wait, she put us right down on the list. The wait was only about 5 minutes before someone came for us. I'm not sure why they do that as the restaurant wasn't nearing closing time, but just beware that you may have to go against the grain and ask to be seated even if you are directed elsewhere (good thing Bryan allowed me to open his Navigator with my fingertips to check lunch times before we boarded).

Lunch, Parrot Cay - YUMMMMMMM! Looking back, this was the best non-dinner meal of the cruise. Service was impeccable also. Great way to kickoff our time aboard. A highlight was when I went up for soup, a CM asked me if I had a little girl who looked just like me in a matching shirt. When I nervously confirmed that was true, the CM told me she was the most polite child she's ever seen! WOOT for my Krissy!

After lunch, we went next door to the meetup where I got to chat with a bunch of the people who I had been posting with for the prior 8 months. Here's a tip for anyone planning one of these - bring nametags and everyone put their username on it too! I finally got everyone straight about 10 days later when I was able to return to the boards and put families with names with usernames! At this point I want to thank everyone in my cruise group for being so much fun for the last year. It was great to countdown with you all while planning and researching... and making FE gifts too!

cont...

We headed to our cabin after the meetup. Oh yeah, nice and tiny! We had an inside 11A and we knew it was gonna be tight so I had prepared. There was very little drawer space and no steamer trunk, so I brought one of those handy closet daily clothes divider for kids. That along with the over the door shoe hanger were lifesavers. We had brought a small pop up cooler for the wine and margarita mix, but the fridge thing in the cabin was always cold enough for us. At this point I want to say that we were completely cool with our room, but I think that had to do with the fact that we got it for dirt cheap. If I was going during peak times and didn't have KSF, I would be disappointed. Thank goodness we were prepared for the situation - hooray for the disboards (even the tip I learned about lifting the bed to slide luggage under - I would have never thought of that and it worked perfectly!)

My kids were very serious about the life boat drill. Krissy is a Titanic fanatic. She's only 7 but she's a "special" type of 7 year old and the Titanic is one of her obsessions. She knows everything about it and it's maiden, final voyage. So we watched the in-cabin video twice, tried on our life vests and prepared for the siren we knew was coming. It signaled and off we went (Bryan and I followed the kids mostly, I'm telling you they were serious about this!) This process is so much nicer with no life vests.

We used the wave phone to let my parents know we were heading to the Sail Away party and we staked our place on deck 9. We were a bit late so the streamers had already been handed out and the dancing was underway. Warning: Snippy Wife coming. Three of us were dancing and smiling and one of us was standing with a frown like a bump on a rock. I gave Bryan a mean look and told him that if he wasn't gonna have fun with us, at least go find the kids some streamers. I got a mean look in return and he stormed off. I think perhaps I was still bitter about him stealing my book and getting to sleep in past 4:30AM. ;) After a bit, Bryan reappeared with streamers and my parents! Party time! We honestly didn't have a great viewing spot, but everyone was happy nonetheless (tip - if you want to be able to see the stage, either be right in front or get on the pool or watch from deck 10).

IMG_7688.jpg

IMG_7696.jpg

IMG_7699.jpg

After the party, we got in line to get the kids' Mickey bands. This took a full hour but it was only because one of the laptops wasn't working and they were also training one of the CM. I sat on the floor and the kids played with their streamers and we mostly just chilled for a few. Getting the bands only took a few minutes once it was our turn. We checked out the Lab and Club and were EXTREMELY impressed. The kids were so excited! We went back to the room and pulled out of clothes for dinner. We didn't get a chance to change though because it was already time for the All Aboard Show. Wow - time flies on the ship!

I must pause here to say that we are big fans of theater and especially musicals. I had high expectations on the nightly shows because of all the raving on here. I sat there on the first night just amazed... somehow my expectations were exceeded. Wow, just wow! I loved every moment that I spent in the Walt Disney Theater. I am a hard critic too - but from this All Aboard Show, I was on cloud 9!!!

Look how excited my dad is!
IMG_7712.jpg

I smile now just thinking about these shows:
IMG_7714.jpg

Back to the room to throw on our dress clothes and we found the room had been turned down already. The kids loved how bunk beds magically appeared while we were at the show. We still had not met our room host, but he had gotten all our beds ready and left us our nightly surprises.

This is what a swan looks like after being hugged by a 4 year old

TIME FOR DINNER!!! Bryan and I love food and we LOVE cruise meals. We just love being taken care of while ordering whatever and however much we want. I won't talk about my thoughts on our serving team yet because we were still in happy-land at this point. Our meal was good and had one of the best dishes of the trip - the Mixed Grill. I will note here that not many of my future reviews of dinner (food and service) will be positive, so take note of the times I mention something good! ;)

Our server did not know how Dine and Play worked - he told us we needed to register for it at guest services, so I just took Krissy to the Lab when she was done eating. Our poor Miles didn't make it very long at all (bummer because he was so stoked to get into the kids' area) and our head server (Mark) made him a bed.

IMG_7717.jpg

I wasn't feeling well at all after dinner, so I changed the cabin number for DisneyZell on the FE sheet and my wonderful hubby went off to deliver the folders that I made. Miles was all tucked in already so I took a hot bath in the tub and then tried to settle into bed. Bryan picked Krissy up a bit before the Lab closed and she helped him drop off all the gifts! My family are superstars!

Thanks for sharing your family's MR cruise experience. I'm enjoying your TR and tips. You and DisneyZell have such a flair for writing! Some questions: (1) which deck was your cabin on? (2) do you have any pictures of your inside room? (3) do the 11A cabins have the split bath? I'm looking forward to reading more of your TR. Thank you.

I am in total agreement! What fun to read! I know everyone is busy but I can't wait for more!:woohoo:

Michelle

Enjoying your trip report so far! My DS8 is also into the Titanic BIG-TIME and was the same way for our drill when we cruised last year. He deemed us "safe" because we had WAY more lifeboats than the Titanic did :thumbsup2

Sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for the rest of your trip report. Great job so far!

Michelle...I am loving your trip report so far...at least I can read yours while DH enjoys his time off down in North Carolina (he'll get mad at me for saying that...he never likes to travel and I always tell him it is his time off from the school routine here!) Hopefully DH will honor his words when he says he'll have another segment up on Thursday.

We were on deck 7 (Cabin 7043). I can't imagine a better location - it was right off the elevators but it didn't feel like a high traffic area at all. We didn't have a split bath. We've never had one so it didn't seem like it was missing anything to us. I will check my pictures for some in-cabin shots.

Thanks to everyone reading and commenting! I have to have Bryan pull out his precious navigators to jog my memory on the sea day's events!
