We will be traveling by car with 6 adults and 4 kids from Indianapolis to Disney World in June. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to stop along the way and things that might interest the kids to see?

Hello fellow Hoosier! I'm not sure if you're wanting a couple of pit stops to get out and stretch your legs kind of thing or rather a few day stop over, so depending on that answer my list might change, but....

What about Nashville? You could stop a the Parthenon, it would give the kids a good place to get out and run around, plus if you're lucky you might be able to catch a really cool art fair that they have there.

Or Chattanooga, here you could go to Rock City, or to Look out Mtn. I don't know how old the kids are, but I remember loving going there for school field trips as a kid. (used to live in Chattanoogo)

Or Atlanta, if you want a more mid point place. There you could go downtown and see Olympic Park. Or if you like water parks you could go to White Water park.

HTH!

Hey fellow Hoosier! Readytogo has made some great suggestions. You can also stop at the Georgia, Florida boarder. I believe there are some great welcome centers there.

Hey, another fellow Hoosier here! :yay: You have already gotten some great suggestions, how about Mammoth Caves in KY, or Louisville slugger museum? Definitely stop at the Florida welcome center when you get there.

You are a brave woman to drive with 6 adults and 4 kids, hope you have a fun and safe journey. :goodvibes

Good suggestion Donaldswife! I would 2nd Mammoth Cave! My aunt lives about 15 min from there, and we went many times as a kid into my teen years. It was always really interesting and fun to go hiking through the woods.

Do they still have Rock City or Ruby Falls open along the way? I remember when I was younger they had signs up all over the place, but it has been a while.

I always loved stopping in Chattanooga and in random places in Georgia that sold peaches. We stopped in one place that you could pick your own. So fun!!

They do still have Rock City. Those signs go on forever! LOL

There was some dinosaur museum/place that was off an exit we stopped at. I can't remember where but there were a million signs for it as well.

We just go straight through, only stopping for gas/bathroom breaks. It's too long of a drive to just putter down for us.

We're a couple hours south of you but we always just drive straight on, too. We do like to stop at the Welcome Centers and get out and stretch our legs and look at the literature. It's not a bad drive at all.

We really enjoy the scenic view on 24 through Tennessee when we do drive. I know that's not necessarily a kid thing, depending on their age, but I figured I'd throw that out there.

Wow, there's a lot of Hoosiers on this site. :thumbsup2

Add us to the Hoosier list, we live outside of Williamsport and are making the drive for the 1st in 2 months. I don't think there is anyway we can drive all at once, so I have been trying to figure where to stop for an overnight.....any suggestions, I was thinking just south of Atlanta.

If you can plan on making it into FL, there are plenty of places to stop and you'd be only a few hours away from WDW.

We drove left in the afternoon and stopped in Georgia the last time we drove. This time we are planning on leaving early in the morning and stopping at the Florida state live. We drove straight thru home last time, but it was a really long day.

I highly doubt I can make the Fl line in one shot, we are planning on leaving in the early morning hours so I am thinking by the time we get out of atlanta we will be a little worn out......Can anyone suggest any hotels?

We usually don't make reservations. Once we get on the other side of Atlanta, we just drive until we decide we want to stop for the night. Then we start watching the signs and just pick a place.

Hello Hoosiers!!! We are driving to WDW in June as well. However, we are coming from Northern Indiana (another 3 hours north of Indy). Our one stop on the way down is going to be at one of the Marriott's in Louisville because DH will already be there at a conference. DD and I will be there at approx. 8pm. DH and I will take a short nap and get up btw 2a and 4a and take off hoping to be in Orlando at btw 2p and 4p.

We are debating on stopping on the way back. I am thinking somewhere around Chattanooga will be our most likely stopping point if we do decide to stop.

In addition, as you stop at the rest areas or gas stations, look for the free travel booklets they have sitting out. There are always coupons for the hotels along the highway.:)

We do that, too. For some reason we like stopping at those rest areas. :goodvibes

Hi fellow Hoosier! :wave2:

We are just north of Indianapolis in Westfield (how about those storms last night?!).

We drove to WDW last October. We drove as far as Valdosta, GA the first day and stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites/Conference Center on a recommendation from a fellow DIS'er. It was a nice place.

The next morning we only had to drive ~4 hours to WDW; worked out great.

As far as stopping places --- can't help you there since we didn't take the time to stop and see any sights (just a yummy breakfast at Cracker Barrel!).

Oh, and we drove straight thru on the way back home. Ouch!

Have a safe trip!

Debbie

Another Hoosier here! We are planning to drive in Oct.

It is the first time driving to Orlando with kids. They will be 3 and 6 when we go. We have done this drive twice before when we were in college. Plus we did drive to Charleston, S.C. last May. I considered that a warm up for Disney. DH is having a hard time with the 16 hour drive vs the 2 hour flight. But we survived the 12hr drive to South Carolina just fine so I think we will be okay ;)

Right now I am looking at an early morning departure and staying the night south of Atlanta. On the way home I think we will aim for Chattanooga.

I think the Dinosaur Museum is in Kentucky around the Cave City exit. I seem to remember a lot of signs for it in that area when we turn off to go to Dale Hollow Lake.
