This is a very specific question, but maybe someone here can answer it.

My ds is saving his money to buy one of the higher-end Indy hats. If he wears the hat in the rain, will it be ruined? I'm hoping he can wear it throughout the trip, but we're sure to have some downpours on some (if not most) afternoons.

FYI we were at our local Cracker Barrel the other day and they had Indy hats-one was a brown felt (the lady said they didnt sell many of those) and the other was a grayish pleather type which she said was hard to keep in stock. My son got the latter ($30).

Thanks! That's less expensive than the ones at DHS. I wonder how the hats would hold up in the rain?? My guess is not too well.

While I haven't bought one in several years, I have found that the DHS IJ hats are a good quality. They will certainly not melt in the rain but the stiffness will wear out faster and the crest of the hat will collapse faster. That will happen eventually anyway.

On the whole, I put mine through the ringer, hiking (often in a drizzle) and so forth. They held up well but, as I said, they are now pretty floppy. I would no longer wear these in public (but I didn't when they were new). I now wear an orvis hat when hiking.

As long as your DS doesn't treat the hat as if he were IJ, he should get great enjoyment out of it.

We bought an Indy hat for DS in Jan 07 at the Indiana Jones cart outside of the show. It cost us around $50 it is all leather, has a fabric band around it with a pin hooked to it that says "Indiana Jones" It isn't a pin for pin trading mind you, it's just a hat pin. There were cheaper hats available, but the quality wasn't the same. The hat being leather lets DS bend it the way he wants it. It was a little big for him, but he is growing into it :) He wears it in the rain and we've had no problems with it at all. Because it is leather, the rain doesn't affect it. It was a little pricey for a hat, but DH opted for the leather hat for the exact concerns/reasons you mentioned. Hope that helps!

If I bought that hat, I would never hear the end of it. Besides, I need to save up my money for an iPhone.

yes the true fedoras are really expensive. Like everything you get what you pay for (most of the time) :goodvibes

Hey ... it's not really an "Indy" hat unless it's beat to heck and kind of cruddy looking. Thus the lower price crush-able felt fedoras should suffice nicely. It'll just look authentic more quickly.

Being a hat enthusiast (I'm rarely seen without my rabbit fur felt fedora when it's not hot out) I understand your worry, but you can scotch guard almost anything. Just follow the directions and have patience and follow the directions. Always test it in an inconspicuous spot (like inside the hat if it doesn't have a liner).
If you get a leather one it will likely already be protected against water

I want an Indy hat - could I only get it at the Studios? We are not going there this trip.

My dad was at WDW back in Feb. and went looking at DTD for Indy stuff (ie hat). At World of Dis, they told him the only place to get Indy stuff was at HS since technically it is not Dis merchandise. The same went for Star Wars, yet they sell the cars and build your own lightsaber at Once upon a Toy. Go figure!

Your local boy scout shop has something very similar. It's actually a field uniform item. The adults in our troop favor them.

The hat is wool, so, it is crushable and stands up to water. Leave off the hat pin and it will pass. It's virtually indestructible. ~$35.

My DH got a great IJ hat with mickey ears, has worn it several trips and has held up, even through Ernesto!

My brother has the Indy hat and the only suggestion I wold make is to buy some leather spray. The kind you would buy to but on leather shoes to protect against rain and 'weathering and then the hat should be fine.
