Incredibly Disturbing, Sick Behavior.

Two years I OD'd in a suicide attempt. The first person I reached out to before I did it egged me on and said he'd provide a gun for me if I really wanted to die and was cursing me and just being generally hateful. So I took the pills. Then I was afraid of dying alone so I messaged some other friends on IM and they called the police who broke my door down and got me to the hospital. So not everyone is like that, but some people are that hateful.

I am glad you didn't succeed:hug:

Oh my... How awful.

This is eerily similar to the recent movie "Untraceable".

In defense of the other posters on that site, the guy was mentally ill and had threatened suicide before. Maybe they thought he was just being a drama queen and had created a huge ruse. I don't know, I just can't hold them accountable for some mentally ill guy killing himself.
I'm having trouble because I kind of agree with this.
A family member attempted suicide about a month ago. While I don't have a great relationship with him, I of course don't want him dead. It's just hard for me to hold other people accountable for someone's actions. It's definitely very sad though. :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

I don't care how many times they heard it; they should have reported it. They should have done what ever they could have to get him some basic assistance. There is no excuse.

But would you have sat there, at your computer, watch him ingest whatever it was that he used to attempt suicide, watch him get sleepy, and then unconscious? I hope not.

THAT was the name of the movie. I hated that movie. It was incredibly disturbing. I thought the same thing when I read this news story.

Years ago we saw somebody jumping of a bridge.
As we own a professional freight ship we have all the equipment for live saving on board.
As the mainstream flushed him right in front of the bow we were able to rescue him.

Pulled him out of the water, called the police and he was taken to a hospital.

Several hours later his family showed up and starting yelling at us why the he………….. we did not mind our own business.
It was the sixth ore seventh suicide attack and the wished there father had succeeded this time.

We were completely astonished and thank you for the roses. Next time we will call the family first and ask there permission.

:sad2: :sad2: :sad2: People are unbelieveable! But you know if you had ignored him they would have tried to sue you for failing to rescue "poor Pops"!

Sure there is. It is the internet and wackadoodles are a dime a dozen. If there were people watching him in REAL LIFE ingest the pills and not call for help, well, they would be not very nice people.

You don't know who is being straight up on the net, you just don't. Sometimes people are beyond redemption.

Not to go all Psych100 on everyone, but this seems like the principle of the bystander effect applies here. It states that individuals are less likely to help in a situation where other people are present. There are many possibilities as to why this exists, such the diffusion of responsibility among the group so that each individual feels less responsibility to step in. There is also the feeling that someone else more qualified will step in to help.

This is not an excuse for the behavior, just a possible explanation. I think the bystander effect may have been increased because none of the individuals were viewing the situation in person, and therefore felt even less personal responsibility to get involved.

Apparently if you are in an emergency situation in which you need help, the best thing you can do is call out specific people in the crowd and give them direction. Doesn't really apply to this situation, but is still good to know.

It's difficult I think. At the end of the day we're all primarily responsible for our own actions and while there are some people whose lives have been saved by others intervening in a suicide attempt there are others who would have gone ahead regardless or just tried again until they succeeded. One of my dad's best friends committed suicide a few years ago, he never told anyone beforehand just left a note to his wife and 2 young sons then hung himself in a local forest. He'd been depressed for quite a while and was actually due to begin counselling just a few days after he died. His parents actually blame his wife for it and have been quite vicious to her which obviously hasn't made her grief any easier to bear. I'm not trying to excuse the actions of those who encouraged him, just saying that sometimes if someone is determined to commit suicide then they will. At the end of the day, my thoughts are with his family and friends as I can only imagine what they're going through.

I agree. This actually happened in the case of Michael *point to sig* He was knocked off his bike then kicked and beaten to death with a piece of wood by a group of teens. There were witnesses but I imagine seeing something like that would be incredibly shocking and when people did react it was too late. I did a first aid course recently aswell and they made reference to this.. You can have all the good intentions and knowledge in the world but until you're actually faced with a particular situation then you can't say for sure how you would react.

I am sorry for your loss. How horribly tragic. I'm married to a FF/paramedic and I do not understand this "standing around in shock thing". I'm sure it is true but I've never heard of it before.:guilty:

People may have a deathwish or something but I still think I would do what it takes to at least try to help someone. There are a lot of whackadoodles out there but if I ever turned my head on them, I'd also never be able to sleep again.

It's so true. More than once my family has walked into a situation where a medical situation was occurring and people just do not know what to do- they totally freeze.

Once was when I was a kid. We were visiting my grandparents and a little boy passed out in the pool- his family was just watching like "DUH?!?!" My mother went over pulled him out, and when he stopped breathing, did CPR until the paramedics got there. His family just stood there the whole time completely in shock/unaware. Scary

Recently, DH and I were in a public building (I want to say town hall?) and a man was having a seizure. The security guard was trying to pin him in his chair :scared1: I went over and helped lay him on the ground and move things away from him so he couldn't get hurt, while I had DH call 911. As we were leaving, DH asked how I knew what to do. Ummmm....... it's pretty basic? And I've taken first aid even though I let my certifications lapse. But apparently most people do not take first aid or do not remember. It scared me that out of all the people there no one else knew what to do or wanted to do it, and also that a security guard in a building like that wouldn't have been trained to deal with things like that.

So I guess there is some truth to the notion that people freeze and don't do anything

Dawn - I thought that the article I read said that the people chatting on his website did discuss pretty early on what to do. They didn't know for sure where he lived or were positive they knew his real name. That's why they didn't act sooner.

I actually was on an online game chatting with someone I had played with for at least a year that was talking about committing suicide. There were several of us talking to him. When he left our voice server we were frantic trying to find out who to call. Yeah we had played with him a long time but we really didn't know "who" he was. We had an idea what city he lived it and someone had his real life phone number so we did call it in based on that info. It's hard though - I know I never tell people exactly where I live or give out my real name.

DH went and visited a friend and her daughter who was in the hospital yesterday. She had a severe asthma attack and her boyfrield did not know what to do. He froze and she couldn't get her inhaler put together quick enough. Her mom picked her up and drove her to the hospital. She died in route and was basically dead for about 4 minutes. Thank God they were able to revive her at the hospital.

As a parent (and I know you're one too) this really hit me hard, doing the "what if that had been my child" scenario, I cannot imagine waht those poor parents are going through.

That is what I was thinking. It is so hard to believe that people could sit there and just watch but not alert the authorities. :confused3
