Increase WiFi range of home computer? Any tips

I never doubted you :) So, we have DSL, not cable internet. Unfortunately, its the only service that is available where we live. I would plug the modem into a phone jack upstairs, then plug the router into the modem, and the plug the PS4 into the router? Then add a USB WiFi adapter to the desktop, and we'll be all set? Thanks so much for your help!

Yup! :thumbsup2

When you plug modem into the wall jack upstairs, do so and let the modem work for say 5 minutes THEN, plug the router into it. Wait say another 5 minutes or more and then plug the PS4 into the router.
Can tell you your Son is going to be thrilled with the hardwire connection speed.

Awesome!! Thank you very much!

Here is an excellent, highly rated WiFi dongle at a terrific price. Performs well and has a pop up antenna which would be a plus with your desktop.

LOL! I was just on amazon myself! I was looking at this one..

But maybe the one you posted is better, with dual band? I need one compatable with vista, which popped out at me on the panda one.

Chip set in the one I recommended is superior... highly rated. Works aok with Vista. The Panda you mention I would not go with. Pales in comparison. As for dual band, your router must support dual band. Regardless, the one I recommended is the way to go.. 8-)

We bought a netgear earlier this year. Router is in basement and I was having trouble on the second floor office. Installed the extender and it works great.

Had you moved the router to the second floor you would not have needed that extender and saved $89+.. The extender was an unnecessary expense that may in fact have given you a poorer end result then had you just moved the router/installer it properly. Best bet always is to set-up properly and then if necessary resort to adjuncts like extenders/repeaters..

WRONG. I saved a lot of time and a lot money because I would have had to run the lines through the walls up to the second floor to move the router. I would had to buy more cable line, drill some holes, fish the line through the walls, buy and install the outlet plate. So $89 was way cheaper!

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I didn't want to bug you with a PM. Maybe others can chime in as well?

My DS was very excited at the thought of moving the internet upstairs to hardwire his PS4 connection. Then, we looked around the room and there is no phone jack!! We have a blank cover outlet in that room, but I took the cover off and sent a picture to a couple handymen/network people on craigslist, and they both said that it doesn't look like a phone jack inside. The only phone jack upstairs is in the master bedroom across the hall (no adjacent walls).

Is it worth looking into having a phone jack installed? Not even sure how much that would cost. Are there any other options? What about something called a Powerline?

Thanks so much for your help!

I've been using these Linksys extenders and these are the real deal.

At Costco, a double pack of these runs $109

Pair one of these to your router, then plug it into a socket near the PS4 and watch your PS4 scream.

I would also be careful when replacing a Comcast rented modem/router. Sometimes the rented modem/router is part of a bundle. And you could very well end up unbundling the bundle price if you return the rented equipment.
