Increase in rude and obnoxious people?

People "Rude and Obnoxious"? No that couldn't be happening in the world today. Come on people, we see it everday. I go to Disney to get away from this. I'd tell you when we go, but I don't want everyone knowing what the best time of year to go to Disney is....


This country has taken a major moral dive over the past 40 years. Most people only care about their own needs. Don't blame the increase of rudeness or obnoxiousness on the current economic state. It's been there for many years. Maybe a slight increase, but it's been there. We live in a competitive society that breeds this type of behavior.


I actually find it rather humerous to watch people melt down after a long day of driving their kids to the brink. Often times the parents melt to become subhuman. While the kids are only trying to tell them they were done two hours ago. Yet it's the parents yelling at the kids.


You do run into people that are on a "mission." God forbid you get in their way. They are headed to some ride, and if you happen to cross their path, you are likely to get run over. Oh wait, I have people fly up behind me driving when I am driving 10 over the speed limit. They are so close, I can't see their license plate, and this often happens when I cannot move over.


The electric carts at Disney can be a real pain. I've been bumped in the ankles, not from rude drivers. Just pure accidents. However, I appreciate the need for them. Do people need them? Yes. Plenty of people would not be able to enjoy the park without them. It would be nice if Disney setup lanes for them to ride in though.


Disney is where the magic is for me. I'm not going to allow someone to ruin it for me. I'm the only that can ruin it for me. By letting other people to get to me.

As others have said... rudeness is everywhere, and it isn't new.

Our upcoming trip will be our first extended (longer than 3 days and not our honeymoon) vacation since 2002. On that trip, we were staying in Wildwood, NJ and it was my wife, myself and our oldest son, who at the time, was just 2 years old.

We decided to take a dolphin watching cruise out of Cape May, and while waiting for the boat to depart, my son was getting loud. He and I wrestled a lot at that point in time because he enjoyed it.

Joking around, we were wrestling and I picked him up to prop him on the rail of the ship. Again, jokingly, I laughed with him and said "What if I drop you over the edge?"... a woman who was approaching 942 years old absolutely lost it on me.

Suddenly I was the devil. "You don't EVER threaten a child in that way you sick son of a b****!" She repeated that over and over and told me she was going to call DYFS on me right then and there. She went as far as to get the captain of the ship, who 5 minutes later, approached us.

The woman's husband totally abandoned her and told the captain that he watched the entire thing and there was NO ill intent on my part, we were simply playing. The captain asked that, obviously, I don't play 'like that' again... to which I agreed. But, seriously... the outrage from this woman and the fact that, to this day, it has ruined my vacation experiences.

People have been, and will continue to be rude in all walks of life. I'm hoping our Disney vacation is a magical one. With three children (9, 3 and 2) all having their first taste of a 'real' vacation... we hope it's something we enjoy and can continue to do for years to come.

As others have said... life is what you make of it.

OMG!! Just don't dangle anyone over the edge of the ferry boat, or worse yet, the Small World ride!!!

Seriously, not sure I would judge that woman as "rude" per se. Overstepping her boundaries, yes. Rude? No - I would say she probably honestly cared for the well-being of your child and didn't understand the "play" that was going on. Rude would be to say your child was a brat and you had no business being there.

I hope you have a GREAT time at WDW!!!

I very much agree with previous posters in that the refereance to Trailer Parks was uncalled for. Unfortunatly, the behavior you are speaking of is not limited to those who may live in trailer parks, but also to those who also live on your street. I have always said that manners are free, and even people who are well-off tend not to "afford" them... I know many who live in big, beautiful houses and have no class at all.

Addressing the issue of rude behaviors... you are very right, unfortunatly. People seem to forget how to act in public places, or in general. I can use the F*bomb like the rest of them, but I choose not to do so where children can hear it, where it can offend others, and try to never air our "dirty laundry" in public... The Golden Rule is a big part of the way I bring up my children. There are many kids and adults who dont know what the golden rule is. It's up to us as parents to maybe use some of these instances as teaching moments and let the kids know that kind of behavior is not OK! If you let it ruin your day/trip, they have "won".

The bad thing is - children are products of their parents and if their parents are not smart enough to act and treat others appropriatly, the children won't either, the circle will continue to be a vicious one. Right down to those who judge others as to where they live and what they live in! You might want to invest in a mirror, OP.

I experienced a couple bad ones down in the World last week. I had someone approach me and tell me (very rudely and snottily) that I needed to change my shirt because it was offending her, I had a shirt on that said Blessed Be and had a Pentacle on it. I quietly said "1st amendment.." and walked away. She huffed and went and complained, but there was nothing a CM could do about it. The second event involved my wheelchair (I have chronic pain and need a chair some days, other days I don't). I had a man try to move my wheelchair from a designated wheelchair spot in the Fantasmic show. He kept saying things like "oh you aren't handicapped, etc". A CM stepped in and made him leave..

Unfortunately there are rude people everywhere.. we just gotta learn to deal with them.

You know, your post would be a lot better and more helpful if you leave out the offensive Trailer Park convention comments (How would you feel if someone started making derogatory NJ comments?) and the political commentary.... Its extremely rude and obnoxious (and a bit ironic)

As for rudeness yes it does happen...But I've seen certain people act like that for years at Disney or anywhere else. Maybe you just haven't noticed it. If someone is dropping f bombs around your kids or being really bad, then seek out a cast member.

I know that this may not be a popular post and I even except some ridicule, but I’ve been itching to ask it.

I’ve had an increased number of friends and acquaintances tell me that they have noticed an increase in rude and obnoxious people visiting Disney World in the last few month. They told me it was like there was a Trailer Park Convention in town and half of them skipped it to go to Disney.

We love Disney and try to make it a yearly visit with the family. We have always had a great time even when it becomes busy. I have 4 little ones and we used to get season passes to Six Flags near our home, but stopped because of the rudeness, line cutting, and excessive use of the F-bomb in casual conversations by others. (Mostly unsupervised teens)
We cut back on everything to save so we can afford to take the trip to Disney, but I would be very disappointed if what I am being told is true.

By no means to I come from money or am stuck on myself. My wife and I donate a lot of our time to the Boy Scouts, Youth Sports, and Church. Like most people, when we do spend our hard earned money after our government and state rapes us with taxes, we like to enjoy ourselves in a clean, safe environment with our loved ones.

VERY well put! I also can swear with the best of them, and around my husband and certain friends / peers that I know won't be offended, I do. I never, however use bad language around my children, parents, most extended family or in public. In fact it was only recently that I used any bad language around my brother. We're in our 40's. We were also raised to obey the Golden Rule.

It will be interesting to see how our kids handle their first trip to Disney in June. They will be 6 & 8 and if they hear someone call another person stupid, they turn to me in horror and in a stage whisper will say "Mom, he SWORE!!"

Sounds to me that you will do just fine in WDW! Treat others as you want to be treated and all will fall into place.... hopefully!

So funny you say that about "stupid"... We were just talking aboutthis the other day... To us, "Shut up" was equally as bad! My parents reacted the same way as if we had said any other bad four letter words... Oh how the times have changed!?!

While in line at Splash Mt. a child in front of us needed to use the restroom, he was maybe 5 or 6. Instead of getting out of line his family crowded around him as he peed in a soda bottle, and then they put the bottle down on the ground and walked away. I was too stunned to say anything.

I posted one time that I thought Disney was becoming more Six Flaggish and was taken out to the wood shed for it. I totally understand the OP's comment.

There used to be issues with the Brazilian Tour Groups with this kind of thing... Disney cracked down on it... That's just messed up. I'd almost rather two of them get out and cut back in then leave a pee bottle around.

OMG, Some of you are ridicules. The original poster posted a concern that he/she had and was asking others if they had any similar experiences, and then some of you are going to flame him/her for the words Trailer Trash and rape. Give me a break!

What you are missing is the original intent. I don’t hate a movie because there may be a scene in it that may offend someone. I look at it as a whole, NOT just what may offend someone and totally bash the movie for it. That goes the same for any post.

This Political Correctness and I must not offend anyone for an opinion different from mine is getting WAY out of hand.

The Poster is just looking out for what is best for his/her family. I find the personal attacks disturbing and unlike the Disboards, but then again, I’ve only been trolling them for a short time.

Yes, I have seen a change in how people are getting more aggressive. Not only at Disney, but all over. I too believe that there is an over usage of the F-word and a lot of other words, and I try to keep my children away from it also. It just seems to get harder and harder as we find it in every walks of life and Medias. The one thing that did seem to bother me more this last trip to Disney is IMHO the over usage and rental of electric chairs or Scooters for those that are too lazy to walk. I’ve seen the same people walking around the resorts and stores, and then pop on them.

Good luck to you and don’t let some of the negative posts on this forum deter you from doing what you think is right for your family, and a BIG THANK YOU for serving our country.

Same thing for our family. When my son heard someone say "**** ing shut-up" he whispered to me that they said a bad word. Actually, he was referring to "shut-up" because he didn't even know the f-word was bad, he hadn't heard it before, and he was 6 at the time!
On our last Disney trip, we only heard swear words a few times and they were all from teens at the pool.
