Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Great was a good word after the rain but in yesterday morning’s race it was just oppressive, especially when headed with the wind.

I’m not seeing an important ingredient anywhere in your post…carbs. That is except for a small amount in the V Water. More than likely you are feeling nausea as your system is attempting to restore blood glucose levels. Anyone who has done a really hard leg workout in the gym has had a similar feeling. Try to get a few more carbs in post run to help get nourishment into the system.

Other than that, it is not uncommon for a little queesiness post run as your body returns to normal

Thanks! It makes perfect sense! I could easily add some fruit into the post run... actually that sounds quite nice!

And yes, the morning did not look as good. I'm glad I held off running (I've been trying to run in the evenings bc of the race time)! I'm so impressed with your run!

"Yesterday I ran the "Toughest 10k". I thought this was a gimmicky race when I first saw the brochure and blew it off. But I had a couple friends who said they were running the event and I really was not looking forward to a 10-12 mile run in the late summer heat. Yes it is still hot here in Houston."

"I came on a girl who was in tears. I stopped to see if she needed help and she was just panicked – no physical issue just not wanting to go over to the other side knowing she would have to come back. You could see fear in her eyes. I kind of put my arm around her shoulder and pointed her up the hill and said I would run it with her. We had to stop a couple times to allow her to get out of her red zone. Once we crested I had to hold her back a bit as she wanted to take off like a rocket. Once near the bottom she thanked me and said I should go on. I did the final mile in 9:40 for a total time of 70:18. Not the time I had planned but a rewarding run. I did see the runner I helped up the third climb in the finish area."

I'm SO glad I didn't enter that as my first 10K (instead ran a small 10K in Galveston the weekend before)-- I read the section about the girl crying to my DH who said, "that totally would have been you". I spend a lot of time at Seabrook Shipyard, so I know that bridge well. Eek! Even the thought of it! I know she appreciated your help!!

Congrats!

We leave the 30th...I feel the same way...I think I will be driving my family and friends crazy :scared1: I am not the same person I was 6 weeks ago!:rolleyes1
I already have a 5K in mind locally beginning of Nov and another in Dec...I KNOW I have to have things on the horizon to continue what I have been doing...hmmm..if there was something in February....

That is awesome!!! You are motivated as a runner! I think being signed up for races is what keeps me going too. I have signed up for an 8k in Nov and hope to do more soon...maybe not anymore half marathons though I think Im happy with shorter distances

Though I would LOVE to do the princess half :rotfl:

Thank you all for your encouragement! I feel so much better knowing that what I am feeling is normal!

I do think the weather is a factor. Here in Texas (we are about an hour out of Dallas), it is still freakin hot! It is impossible for us to find someone to watch our kids early in the morning and our town doesn't seem to believe in street lights or lighting the parks, so we have just been having to deal with it. That one blast of cooler weather a few weeks back was delightful. After running in the 90's, race temps in the 70's will be devine!

Okay...here's my Philly Rock n' Roll recap from today:

Started off strong. By mile 3, my NON-SURGERY knee really started to ache. Luckily my friend and kids were in the crowd soon after. Got some Advil but had to wait FOREVER to get water to swallow it. Miles 4-8 were rough due to my knee. It ached and even gave out a few times. I hobbled much of those miles. I also tried the pain creams that came in the goodie bags. By mile 8, I left it up to prayer because I had to keep stopping and wasn't sure I would finish without walking most of it. Bt mile 9, God answered my prayer, and I was able to run again! I am anxiously awaiting my time because my Garmin also decided to give out on this day! I was hoping to be within a 10-11 min. pace, but the knee did not allow this. At this point, I am hoping for a sub 2:30...that wouldn't be bad since last January I was 3:05. I worked hard this summer, and I was about to cry at mile 7 thinking the whole thing was blown! The power of prayer - and determination! Will post results as soon as I get my time. Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!

Results are in...2:32:27.

WAY to GO!!! Good luck on the time you're hoping for:cool1:

I had the same issue @ the Princess. The knee buckled & just pluam gave out. I really thought I was finished right at Cinderella's Castle! (Boy was that embarrassing, with all the cameras and what-not). Walk, massage, stretch, jog & a few 'ok God- I guess it's up to you' :hippie:--and I finsihed w/ 2:44. A good 25 minutes longer than I wanted, but at least I got thru it.

A BIG CONGRATS to everyone who did the Philly R&R today!!:thumbsup2
Can't wait to hear all the race reports!

Needing to share with others.
Last week I ran 8.5 staying on my 12 mpm pace almost perfectly.
This week I figured should be my last long run, so instead of doing the 10 miles that I had planned, I did 11.25. I did it mostly because I was afraid of doing the half having only gone as far as 10.
I was tough. I knew going into it that an almost 3 mile jump would be a lot, but I figured better now than in Disney.
Really the 1st 9 miles were pretty good. Mile 10 I was tired. Mile 11 I was hurting. I had to talk out loud to myself to keep going. My legs were in serious pain. I did finish, and only about 2 minutes off my expected time. I walked after and streached. I am still REALLY sore and stiff.
I am really worried about being tired and in pain those last couple of miles. AND I hate to feel like this after.
I'm really proud of myself for doing this and very excited about the race, but I'm nervous about feeling, well, badly.

Tammy

Simply said, you know you can do it now. That confidence is going to add a HUGE boost. It might in difficult & yes, you will probably be sore afterward. But the race is sooooo much different than training! The miles really fly by! You get pre-occupied with everything going on, the other runners, the crowd, and the adrenaline. All of that totally gets you through. Before the Princess I had never run 13 miles straight--ever. Never even ran 10 without at least a few walks thrown in there somewhere. But aside from the knee issue I had that lasted a mile or so, I ran the whole thing & barely even noticed! Until after, that is!! LOL.

Of course all the women at the pool later that day were limping & groaning & soaking in the hot tubs and we were all laughing at each other.:rotfl2:

You'll do great! And I'll bet you'll do even better than you think you will!

We finally got our 10 miler in today and it was not fun. I am feeling a little discouraged right now. I am finding it hard to get out the door in the first place, and once I am there it is harder than it was for a while. My pace has slowed and and I'm just not enjoying running like I had been. Anyone else been there? How did you get through?

UGH, I had your day today. I've been training and have run about 6 miles non-stop. A few weeks ago I went on an 11 mile walk, just to see my pace and get a "worst case scenario" situation. I did the 11 miles at a 15min per mile pace so I was ok knowing that + with my running I figured I would be fine.

I think there were a lot of factors against me today. Did a long run 11 miles, but did walking in it as well. Couldn't even make it 3 miles without having to take a walk break. I was hot, tired and winded and kept sucking down water. I drank about 30 oz during this whole time. Found out that my last run was 5 days prior. I finished the 11.1 miles in 2:22:45 so that puts me at about 12:50 per min mile pace. I did a lot of jogging the first 5-5.5 miles with smaller walk breaks (45 seconds or less) and then from there it was walk 1 song, jog one song until we got to the last 1.5 miles and I jogged a half and walked the remainder.

This run beat me up, left me battered and bruised for sure, but I know I can still make it.

It is hard staying motivated but I know we'll do fine, can't wait. I will make it to the finish!!

My plan for the remainder of the 2 weeks is to do two 30 min runs and 1 60 min run this week and two 30 min runs the week of the 1/2.

GREAT JOB!!!! Proud of you way to go :)

Great job on the races and long runs this weekend.

I was unable to run my 10 miler :(. Unfortunately my tendonitis or something flared up in my ankle late in the week so I took today off. Feeling much better and plan on running soon...maybe even tomorrow. I figure the only thing I really need to do is get my 10 mile LR in then begin a very mini taper.

We're getting close now wine 'n diners LOL :)

Does disney usually have a booth set up at the expos to sign up for future races? I would like to sign up for the princess half without having to pay the online fees. If I can sign up there, can I sign my mom up to do the 5k with me also, or would she have to be there herself?

I believe that the only thing offered at the expo are brochures. Disney has converted to 100% on-line sign up and do not take race applications at the expo for future races. They toyed with it in 2007or 8 with the full and Goofy but only did that once. I know hat if I am incorrect on this that someone will surely correct me.

It is my hope with the nightmare Disney is having filling the 2011 marathon and associated races that they will offer things like sign up at the race expo for next year's races, graduated discounts for race fees (rewarding those who enter early) and lock or lower the cost of entry.

Congrats to all of you who raced this weekend!::worship::To those of you who struggled with longer runs - so been there!:guilty:It's amazing to me how it can be "easy" sometimes, and other days torture. I personally think for me it can sometimes be totally traced back to hormones.:confused3Anyways, I know I'm going to be sore and plan on hobbling around the after party - but it won't matter because I'll be celebrating with everyone our accompishment. I actually think it will be good to get a good night sleep after that and hope to wake up feeling only a little uncomforable. I was so burned out a week ago, but am starting to get amped up! Less than 2 weeks!:cool1:

They were trying to get people to register for the WDW Half and Full at the Philly Expo. They had all the medals for upcoming races displayed and gave out tiaras to those giving their email address to have info sent from rundisney.com. If you registered on site for January's event, you received a small backpack that said "In Training For . . . ". I didn't see anyone actually register, but I do not think there were computers available, so I think it would have been on paper. I would have registered but am not sure if I want to do the Half of the Full. I wanted to see how I made out on the Philly course first, and now I still don't know! I doubt they would do this kind of recruiting on property, though. And, I don't think you were able to register for the Princess (although the medal was displayed)...they seemed to be focusing on the January event. As an aside, the medal for the Disney Full is quite substantial, and I may just have to go and get it!

One WISHer complained that she signed up back when registration opened up on line, but still didn't get a bag. I complained that TNT would be signing me up for the race. I didn't get a bag, but they gave me a tiara without me signing up for anything.

I did sign up for the Savannah RnR half. Next November 5, 2011. Can't wait for that!

me too...princess: Once I become a "Wine and Diner"..(cross the finish line at my goal time)..someone coined that term , I love it...so then I dont have to keep sayin...Im not a runner...but...I walk fast!:cutie: I just need to get one more long walk in the next few days...by Wed I think...

Thank you. This is what makes this board so great, the support for all our accomplishments, little and big.
:goodvibes
Oh your welcome! This board has been inspiring and helpful to me...!!

Okay...here's my Philly Rock n' Roll recap from today:

:banana::banana: Congrats!!
And to everyone who crossed their finish lines this weekend:goodvibes

Question for all of you - DH and I planned to run with our ipods - the music really helps us keep our pace. This is our first 1/2 and my first race. When looking at the race website, it said that although you can wear head phones it discourages the use of them so you can hear race messages. What do you guys do - music or no music? Does WDW have music and entertainment along the way? Off to go do my last longer run. Thanks for your advice.:goodvibes

USATF certified races are all supposed to be headphone free. Unfortunately they don't do a good job of enforcing it. There was a race in Minnesota (maybe the Grandma's Marathon) where they had course marshals pulling anyone off and disqualifying them if they had headphones. I don't use headphones ever, not in training and not in a race.

This form states that I need to bring a copy of their photo ID and their original signed event waiver, so as far as I can tell, I'm right back where I started.

I think they mean original as in signed and not a scanned or photocopied version of the signed waiver. I am pretty sure they will have blanks for you to sign at the expo.

First HM done! 2:20:xx. On to Orlando!

Congratulations.

Yes, but the issue is if you are picking up the packet for a friend, you need their signature on the signed waiver to do so. Which is very hard to do if you leave for vacation a week before the race, and they still haven't released the waiver form for you to get signed.

I'm really surprised at Disney on this one. I know it's an inaugural race so I'm not completely shocked the race instructions aren't out yet, even though they normally are released closer to a month out than a week. But the race waiver forms are pretty standard from race to race; they could at least put up a "dummy" version more than a week in advance for people in this situation. *shrugs*

so to headphones, or not to headphones.....
Thats how I have trained...when walking...normally it takes me to get over the 2-3 mile mark, then I seem to be in "my rhythm"....however, with everything I have read it appears the excitement and needing to hear others behind you say..."on the right..." etc...I should not be wearing them.
So I am thinking at this point, at least having them around my neck, and saving them for when I really think I will need a jolt of energy from my music around miles 6-8...which according to the course map, I will personally need it!
I have had the mind set until now that I need my music to keep me going to cross the finish line, but at the same time, I dont want to block everything out and miss the experience of the race.....
