Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Has anyone signed up for both the 5k and the half?

I am not running the 5K but I plan on being there to cheer on everyone.

I have never been accused of nor admitted to being within my right mind.:goodvibes:goodvibes

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I feel a little behind. We have only been running for 8 weeks and my longest run so far has been 3.5 miles!

Just want to echo everyone else that you have plenty of time. If you are on a plan stick with it. You don't want to go too far too fast and end up hurt. It is better to be a little conservative when you are just starting out because your body has to adjust to the miles.

Just to echo what everyone else is saying, you will be fine...I injured my foot and am just getting back into the swing of things. Also when I did my first 10k I never trained past 4 miles (I didnt have a treadmill to train on and it was winter/snowing here), but the excitement of all the spectators and the race itself made it so much easier than any of my practice runs :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

I think the general rule is if you can comfortably do 75% before the race, you will make it the whole way (4 miles for a 10k, 9.5 miles for a HM)

Hope you guys don't mind if I jump in here, I just signed up for the Wine & Dine 1/2 and this will be my first half marathon!! I'm excited and nervous.

I'm currently doing C25K and then moving onto the Gateway to 10K (app on ipod). I should be able to run a full 6.2 miles by the first week of August. I figure if I can do that in at least the 1 hour I can add some walking after that and still make the pacing requirements.

I've done other races but I never really properly trained for them so that is why I am working on the C25K and working my way up. Plus I'll have an additional month and a half at least to keep building on that 10K.

Any advice or tips are welcome
Thanks!

Does anyone know if spectators will be allowed to cheer for the 5k runners on Saturday morning?

I'm currently not scheduled to run the 5k, but I am doing the half. I have a friend running her first 5k, and I'd like to get to cheer her on at the finish if possible. Is this allowed?

I am not sure if they will be allowed in the park but I still plan on being there. They haven't posted the course map yet but I really doubt that the entire 5K will be in the MK. I think the race would start and finish outside of the park. I did the National Kidney 5K at Epcot in 2008 and while only castmembers were in the park there were people in the parking lot before we entered the park and surrounding the finish line.

I just shot them a quick email asking if spectators will be allowed into the park and also if they know if the race will start and end inside or outside of the park. Hopefully even if they aren't willing to give away any details they can at least send some guidance. I'll post the reply if it has anything useful in it.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement! We have been trying to decide which plan to follow and have been leaning towards Bingham's. The only thing I don't like about it is that I would prefer to run 4 days a week (like I have been) and his plan is only for 3 days.

I have also been playing with the idea of doing run/walk intervals. I tried it one day and it improved my overall pace. I just can't seem to kick the idea that it is cheating a little bit!

That's the training program I used. Well, it was more that I used it as a guideline as I tweaked it around what I wanted to do or felt like doing.

I agree about the run/walk intervals. I do feel like I could go a lot longer doing the run/walk intervals but something just "feels" right about running but I think you should just do whatever is best for you. My original goal was just to be able to run the entire half (as I knew I could walk it in under the required time and I wanted to challenge myself) but after my last 10k I've set a new goal of beating my PR of 10:04.

That's awesome. My rule is I can walk if I need to, but never let myself fully recover. If I'm walking more than 15 seconds, I need to run, now.

I did my first half in January at DW, and I did not train too much before. I did a 10K and the ToT 13K, and those were the longest distances I had run. Most of my training was 3 to 4 miles a few times a week and a few 5K's and a few duathlons. I had no problem with the half. But I do not think I could have done the full the next day......

Hello fellow Long Islander!

Hi! Can I join in? I'm doing the half marathon. It will be my third, but my first after a terrible time with tendonitis in my ankle. I'm rebuilding now and am back up to 6.5 miles. We're doing a moms only trip and we're all very excited about it, since none of us have ever been to WDW without our kids. We'll get to do "big kid rides",drink around the world at Epcot, eat at nice restaurants and maybe even SHOP! Can't wait!

Hi fellow Georgian!

My sister and I are also going on a girls weekend to do the relay. I'm sure you all will have a great time.

We're officially registered for the relay! I was slightly confused because I figured the form would ask who was running what, but I didn't see a place to specify... anyone know if we actually have to tell disney that info, or do we just run and hand off?

did a test run for a night time run... I had dinner @ 5:30 and ran at 8..

at mile 2.5 the salad dressing was giving me heart burn... note to self, and all of you. No Italian dressing on the day of the race for dinner;)

Good to know! This made me laugh - I was doing a later run on Wednesday and quickly learned sushi 2 hours before running was not such a great idea. Won't be doing that again!

We have reservations for dinner the day of the race at Wolfgang Puck Cafe at DTD - I figured there I can get some simple carbs if need be. Otherwise, they have a good selection of other stuff too...

I wouldn't overthink dinner too much. A light and simple meal around 4 pm will give you 6 hours to digest. Then a small 200 Kcal carby snack before the start will get you through the race. Not too different from eaing lunch at work and then running when you get home.

Depends on what time your dinner is, I think. We're having a late lunch at Tutto Italia at 2:00pm, and then there's no way I'm chancing a meal after that. I've heard we have to be on buses by 7:00 or 7:30, so no dinner for me. I'll bring snacks to tide me over.

We are planning on eating a 1:00 lunch at Yak & Yeti and then just snacking the rest of the day. I hate running with a lot of food on my stomach. Yuck.
