When I worked at Disney, they had learning centers which were mini libraries, and the Studio's one has thee most comfortable couches, DU was pretty comfortable too but the hours were shorter. Since very few people went in there, I've kicked my shoes off a time or two and got comfortable.
I've also gotten comfortable in a few different places at the Wilderness Lodge. But I'd never take up a whole couch to be rude like that.

Didn't your mother ever tell you no shoes on the furniture?

I said sure, because I have... sort of. I say sort of because it wasn't necessarily a public library but the school library.

I had a study group through the first term of anatomy & physiology during the summer. After my French class ended, I ended up in the library every Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 6PM with them. I was the first one there about half the time and we'd all meet in a study room. Someone usually brought a cooler of food, another person pillows, another person coffee, another dry erase markers and erasers. Sometimes people took naps and I was that person once or twice. In that study room, the couch became a lay down space.

Another time, I used a study room to take a 3 hours nap between classes. But it was the first week of the term and no one was using the study rooms to actually study (well, most people weren't, maybe one or two of them did). It felt awesome.

ETA: I did not put my shoes on the couch because like PP said, you're not supposed to, so I took them off.

I would not but in my library career I've had a pregnant mom fall asleep on a sofa (she was mortified when I woke her up at closing.)

I also had the joy of walking by a couple, um, coupling, when I worked at the university library. They had their shoes on, but other parts of the wardrobe were not fully functional. (ACK!) And it was a study carrell, not a sofa.

I worked in a library in high school and college, and you WOULD NOT believe the levels of "comfort" people have at the library.


They take their shoes off, sleep to snoring, and bring books into the bathroom.

I voted sure--but it really depends on the atmosphere of the library. There are libraries where that would feel entirely appropriate and ones where it would feel very inappropriate.

Here is a photo that a librarian snapped ans asked if she could put on the website of my daughter (several years ago) at our (then) local library, shoes off and feet up, propped on a pillow and reading. If the library is using it on their website, I think it is the kind of place where this sort of homey comfort is encouraged--don't you?

Now--if you area talking about sleeping on the sofa, I think that is not really what the library is for (though if a little kid were doing that while a parent or older sibling did research I would have no issue).

I say nope, but I confess I did recently do this at AKL during our last trip! We had several hours to kill waiting for our ride to the airport and it was too cold to be in the parks. So we went into the big den off the lobby for a little peace and quiet. I don't know what got into me, but I laid down for a good 20 minutes with my hoodie as a pillow.

The YA section of the library i worked at used to be tucked into an out of the way little alcove--nice and cozy and a little TOO private. After finding teens engaged in similar behaviours to what you describe twice, we "ran out of room" for the YA collection in that alcove and moved it into full view of the circulation desk.
We moved books on tape into the alcove, and helpfully went over to offer advice to any of the youth who spent more than a minute there--since it was not their normal thing to be perusing we figured they may need a little help

This reminds me of the lady I saw yesterday in the hall/lobby of the building my doctor's office is in. She was curled up on the couch with her jacket on and hood up over her head sleeping. And her purse was just sitting on the table, but since her back was turned out (she was facing the inside of the couch) anyone could have taken it without her noticing it

I must admit I've slept in the library before
When I was in my junior and senior years of college, I commuted and I had a few classes that were spaced very far apart. I would go into the library and study and then if I needed a nap I would go into one of the quiet rooms, sit in the back and take a nap. A lot of people did it. They had tables with partitions around three sides so you had privacy.
